Iv only had this bike a few weeks, when I gave her a proper clean and polish I noticed black insulation tape on the downtubes and front frame plate. Oh dear I thought as I peeled it off!! but it was like brand new under the tape. Last owner I salute you. So the tapes back on and you realy don't notice it. Has any one herd of this before??

If you mean the fork legs?, I usually use clear plastic film and that protects really well.

The black tape was on the fame downtubes and the engine plate. but the clear tape on forklegs sounds good.

Black tape on black parts of the frame exposed to road debris and stone chips sounds a great idea.

A lot of people use helicopter tape. It was developed to protect helicopter blades.
I've used it on the bodywork when carrying luggage.
Use a hairdryer to warm it when putting on or off.

Where do you get it from though? Someone on the KTM forum was talking about this stuff but I'm not very up on helicopters.

Just checked Ebay and it is apparently widely available - "who'da thunk it?"

The previous owner must have had a huge bunch of keys dangling from the ignition switch on my Bonnie because quite a lot of black paint had been rubbed off the forks in that area, helicopter tape would have saved all that from happening!
Anyway I bought a tin of Black Satin Hammerite from Halfords to touch it up and found it to be a perfect match for the black frame paint :)

Had a run up to Squires Bikers Café at Newthorpe near Sherburn-In-Elmet today, went with my son-in-law he's got a Kawasaki Z1000 (I Do Not Try to keep up with him, he's pretty good tho he does wait for me):).
It's Epic there, there must have been over 200 bikes there today, some right custom jobs too.
Anyway keys started rubbing at the paint again, so I'll get the black insulating tape out on it once I've touched it up again:D:)

I have thought of that, besides the ignition I have a key for the steering lock and one for the petrol locking cap which I had secured to the fob with a rubber band but they still manage to whack the paintwork.

I used to have ignition key and disc lock key on the same ring and found that by stripping out a piece of domestic electrical flex I could slide the outer sheathing over the unused key to protect the paint. Handy also when you lock the bike if you transfer the sheathing to the ignition key as it reminds you to remove the disc lock before attempting to move the bike!

I've come up with an idea that kills two birds with one stone.
    1. Keys flapping around in the wind takes the paint off my forks
    2. I can never remember where I put my keys.
    Solution:-
Take a piece of thin bungee cord like the stuff you find in outdoor shops, attach your keys to it then tie it in a loop so it goes around your neck. Insert key and secure cord to wing mirror then when destination is reached hang keys around neck.
Result:- No paint damage and no loss of keys!:D:D:D

I think it best if I try to explain the rest by means of two photo's:-

You had your thinking cap on. Sometimes I could do with the keys for my bike my car and my van round my neck. also my phone and vape!!
