I have a 2018 Tiger 1200 with 7300 miles on the clock. In my opinion the tyres are great. The original tyres are coming to the end of their life ... Or should I say the front is nearly at deaths door ... My question is ... Has anyone else worn out the front tyre in the usual places of an inch off centre, before the rear? The rear has over 3mm left whilst the front is nearly at the wear mark. Or is it my riding style of pushing the front harder.
Just wait for the rush to tell you those tyres are rubbish, even though that wasn't your opinion or what you were asking.
I've always worn the rear out first, usually change 2 rears to one front. Maybe I'm riding like a pussy ??? Or, maybe it's because the front wheel is rarely down on the road Highly unlikely...........................
Too true .. But I don't mind different opinions. It would be great if the folk on the Tiger 1200 stated what tyres they changed too and the pro's and con's to them and the mileage they got out of them, and if they stayed with the same tyre on replacement.... If they don't mind, that is ... I'm booked on a 4500 mile trip next year to Romania, Poland etc with Magellan Motorcycle Tours. I did the 3500 mile trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia this year.
My reply is to do with the wear on the front being an inch off center (I presume on either side) I had this previously and I believe it is to do with the tyre pressure not being high enough When braking, the pressure forces the side of the tyre into the road and the centre 'folds in' meaning the sides are pushing harder into the road than the centre May I suggest a few extra psi in the front to reduce this affect and hopefully more even wear and this longer life
If you are going for the high mileage, then dual compound tyres will increase mileage while maintaining good grip on the bends Maichelin Road 5, Metzler z8 or 01 are excellent Pirelli GT angels are good but have more style over function
Thanks Red.. Understood !!! .. The Tyre pressures are set to the recommended 32/39. The wear is the usual place on both sides when pushing the front into roundabouts and bends etc. This is the same on all bikes.
Hi Littleade, I have actually seen all Mark and Toby's videos on Ridercamtv .. Toby was the escort on my Spain/Portugal trip last year and Mark was the escort on the Croatia trip this year. Great guys. Yep I watched the videos on their tyre replacements. The Roadtec 01's were on my list too. I was just wondering if anyone on a Tiger 1200 had any inputs. Also looking at what Triumph recommend ... Is it that they just don't do any R&D on newer tyres and/or wont recommend any other tyre for the bike.
I have them on my 800 xrt. Can't fault them in any aspect. i.e. warm up quickly, grippy and great in the wet. Can't comment on wear rate yet, not been on long enough. Don't know if the extra weight of the 1200 would make any difference to them. None, I suspect.
Well guys it looks like i'm going for Michelin Road 5 Trail tyres. Getting them fitted on Monday 30th at Micheldever Station. I talked to a great guy called Damian at Micheldever and he checked on the digital recommendations system for my bike and it stated the Road 5 Trails are now recommended for the Tiger 1200 .... RESULT ... Also, the Michelin tyre £30 off deal finishes on Monday 30th. So I get them fitted to loose wheels for £237.76. Can't fault that
Well, that's, that done ... Just have to wait for the rain to go away now ... Gotta say .. These are the easiest wheels to remove and refit that i've ever done.
Thankfully that's not my garage. I have 4 bikes in mine at the moment, till a mate takes his 2 away that I have been looking after. So for the time being, I had no wiggle room to take out the wheels. My mate Matt down the road, let me swap out his bike for mine for this tyre change process ... But your right .. The garage is a mess, mainly a young family dumping ground My garage below with no space ...
Yes, I am on Bridgestone A41's now and the original tyres were great for roadholding and grip in the rain but oh so very noisy.(drone) Front wore out well before the rear. The T12 is very heavy on the front tyre but then with it's weight it would be. I find the Triumph tyre pressures of 32/39 too low, especially on the front and especially when loaded up. Just adding 4-5 psi at the front makes a great improvement to the handling. I asked Bridgestone Techical services for a recommended pressure for the A41's stating Triumphs 32/39 value and they came back and said no, go to the more normal 36/42 which I did. It's much better for it.
The front on my 2018 which I bought 4-2019 has developed cracks in the tread whic is not confidence inspiring at all. Need a change. Has anyone used PR5 Trail 110/80 fronts with good results? The dealer said that size may mess with ABS and Traction Control.
That's exactly what happens, the front tyre distorts under braking forces, causing the wear you describe. More pressure required!
