USB socket outlet

On my 2008 EFI Thruxton I already have a standard 12V lead connected from the battery with weather protection cap to allow me to connect my battery charger without removing the seat. Does anyone know if it is possible to plug an extension lead into this outlet with a USB outlet to enable me to plug in my iPhone to charge it whilst on the move?
If so, where would I get the cable with the correct connector or is it simply a matter of buying a generic item and a bare connector and then making it up myself?
I have a Kriega tail pack on the seat so I plan to connect the phone and then tuck it into this whilst travelling. Not sure about charging voltage, etc and whether it would damage the phone.
Any advice appreciated.

 

Thanks Keith. Been in touch with a supplier who can provide a 12v fused outlet to plug into the battery charging lead and this can then take the type of lead you suggest. They also told me that this arrangement would correctly regulate the feed into the phone.

Yes, either that or my tailback. I haven't decided to purchase yet as with the phone cable as well there will be a lot of bulk. On a bike with under seat storage I would have just plugged it all in under cover. May just wait and see if anything else becomes available as it's not an emergency requirement at the moment.

 

Thanks for the information. Could you tell me how long the USB lead is as I want to find out if it will reach my tailback on the pillion seat?

 

Thanks but I think that's the extension cable. Before you use that you have to plug the base USB outlet cable into the battery lead outlet. I was hoping that this alone would reach my tailback to avoid several components and too much wire so that it could charge whilst on the move.

Just thought that I'd post an update on this thread as it may help someone.

I found that my son already had an old iPhone charging lead to fit into the cigarette lighter socket of his car which he wasn't using anymore. This was basically a standard syncing lead with a USB socket that fits into a standard 12V outlet.

I ordered an unfused 12V outlet lead from Towzer (slightly different to the link already provided but shown on their website) as the existing battery charge lead on my bike is already fitted with a 3A fuse.

The USB adapter was a bit shaky in the socket and was tending to cut the connection with the slightest movement so I wrapped it in black insulation tape to secure it firmly. I also added a bit of tape around the charge lead connector to seal against any weather. Under power the outlet emits a green LED light which is handy to confirm all is well.

The new lead with the 12V outlet now plugs into my existing charge lead point and can be fed under the seat strap to hold it out of the way and then the phone and link cable plugs in and tucks neatly into the mesh base pocket of my Kriega US10 tailback.

Please note that this will only be used as an emergency; for instance when I have been out all day using the phone as a camera perhaps, etc. and charge has dropped off. By linking the battery to the bike I can charge the phone as I return home in case I need it for calls in the event of a breakdown or whatever.

The cables pack into a plastic bag and now live in the waterproof section of my tailback.

As a point of interest, the Kriega US10 holds an amazing amount of stuff. In the pics I've shown the pack is holding:

Waterproof overtrousers
Waterproof jacket
Inner gloves
EDZ shell shirt
Toolkit with socket set, pliers, tape, ties, fuses, spanners, allen keys, copper grease and a torch
Disc lock and reminder cable

All handy bits in case you get stuck anywhere. I stopped to help a guy on an old Norton the other week and he was very pleased to have the hep of my tools to sort out his dodgy battery connections!

Thanks for the advice. Will only be using mine as a back up for the occasional charge rather than running accessories from it, though.
