Annual boiler and gas fire service booked for this morning (8am to 1pm slot). Up early to make sure kitchen work surface cleared of microwave, bread bin, spice jars and all other clutter, and then door and panels off cupboard where boiler lives, so gasman can have access. Ready for 8am even though I know there is no chance of him being here by then. Coffee and breakfast, and wait... ...and wait. To be fair, they are very good when they do turn up, normally on the second booking of a time slot ("sorry, we had an emergency and couldn't get to you. Would you like to book another date and time?"). And they are usually good at keeping to schedule when it is a breakdown. ...waiting... Always reminds me of the Flanders and Swann song...
As predicted, just received a phone call, "our local engineer is tied up on an emergency and won't get to you this morning. Can we re-book you for this afternoon, 1pm to 6pm?") ...waiting A well, if that's the worst that happens today...
+1, if I could have my time over I’d have gone for a trade such as that, (tho the real money is with the gas certificate), or mechanical engineering, I know three who have done well enough to own several houses, some abroad, and a shed load of cash in the attic (shhhhhhhhh)
I’m a class 1 Welder that carries out commercial/industrial boiler room installations and fully qualified non domestic Gas engineer.. Let me explain it’s not all roses anymore. So many regulations to comply with re training every five years 3k at a time mega expense insurance. Now tell your kids to excel at school and they’ll excel wherever they choose to work...... but they won’t listen
I am a degreed engineer that specializes in piping and HVAC systems, been doing since 1983. Now I am a virtual pipe fitter, and plans interpreter of shit plans generated by a bunch of young keyboard idiots. The tradesmen are getting very valuable and old, new crop seem to be lacking in thought process and basic skills. They freak out and quit when they have to leave the smart phone in the car for safety reasons.
