Hi all, I have an engine noise I don't like and am not sure if it is normal or abnormal. Obviously the Scrambler 1200 is a new bike but the Bonneville 1200 engine is not, so I'm sure a few of you will know it well. The first answer to my question is likely, take it to the dealer - which is fine, I intend to based on what I hear, I just don't want to be that kn*b who the dealer dislikes as I'm there every 5 mins with something insignificant....! - Scrambler 1200 XE only 550 miles on it so far - Had its 500 mile service last week, all good. Aware they change the oil type from a fully synthetic to something else (or something like that) - Engine noises were unremarkable pre-500 mile service - Bike (me) has been VERY strictly adhering to the run in rev range - Bike rides normally and no performance issues When, starting from cold there is a a knocking/thumping which goes with the revs. Sat on the bike its on left side, and in the area shown on the image in the red circles (thats not my bike, I have the XE, this is just a stock image off the web) - don't laugh at me but I cannot distinguish which of the two it is coming from!?!? After 5 minutes of running the noise goes away. I'm no engineer or mechanic but it would be fair to suggest the oil is not getting to a part of the engine quick enough? Is this normal on this bike OR the Bonneville 1200 engine? Any advice much appreciated. I know I've opened myself up to a bit of derision on here but hopefully you can resist that
Always a pain these issues! To be fair, if the noise definitely only started AFTER the service it would seem totally reasonable for you to phone the service department and discuss it with them. They will hopefully invite you to go and let them hear the noise.. No reason to think you are a K*ob !
Agree - back to dealer, if they are aware now - and in the future there is a problem - it will be on their system of report.
Cheers - I have called the dealer and they are happy for me to take it there, leave it to get cold and then have a listen hopefully nothing too serious but its definitely not a nice noise. If I went to view this bike to buy it and they started it up....I'd walk away!
I think I have had the same issue on my tiger 1200 .. was the cam chain tensioner as it is tensioned with oil pressure it took a few seconds for the pressure to build up so you got a slight knocking sound. but it always went away the dealers and triumph themselves said it was normal but to keep an ear on it and if it gets worse to let them know that though was on the tiger not sure if they use the same system on the boniville style engine
I also have the exact same thing with my Tuono but it is simply the cam chain tensioner rattling for a few seconds before the oil reaches it, however I also have a Speed Twin with a very similar engine to yours and have no such issues with it at all, I would definitely get back to your dealer for peace of mind if nothing else, I see you posted this over a week ago, have you been back?? if so what was their verdict??
I do understand your predicament. Yes I think it's probably the cam tensioner... but you're perfectly justified in taking it back in for them to listen to it.
