    Hi guys,

Just bought my first big bike, a triumph speed four. There's a little rust inside the petrol cap around the rim. Nothing crazy, but what's the quickest, a cheapest and easiest way to remove it, or at least stop it falling into the tank?

Don't have a pic of the rust atm as I'm working!

    Cheers in advance!

Bit of scotch brite dipped in grease and rub round the filler hole :)
The grease should pick up the rust and stop it from going into the tank :)

Nice looking bike there, congrats :grinning:
It might be worth getting hold of some brush on rust converter like Rustoleum or similar to halt the spread, then a coat or two of paint.

I did this on an old Kawasaki GT750 that I rescued from a scrapyard :)

When you get a chance post a pic. It would be handy to know if its a rust colour on the metal or a flaking mess.

It's not a flaking mess or I wouldn't have bought it. Just rust colour on the metal. Will take one later :)

If the rust is behind a rubber seal consider replacing the seal as it's let moisture past.

If it isn't flaking, get some rust-cure stuff. Paint it on, turns black and stabilises the oxide (rust). Or the gel (Hammerite from halfords), just paint on carefully, then wipe off, do this repeatedly until it cleaned off, then put a bit of rust prevention on it - ACF-50 corrosion block grease is the best I've found, or just the acf-50 spray.

    And welcome to the forum.

Also put a lump of rag in tge filler with some grease on it so nothing goes in the tank. Then clean off with brake cleaner and then rust proof it

I usually use waxoyl on rusty areas. It is more 'waxy' than grease so dust, debris etc does not stick so much.. It stops the rust getting any worse and tends to stay on longer than ACF50!

Just be careful what you paint it with if that’s the route you decide to go down.

Not many paints will withstand petrol or fumes and it will end up in your tank.

I've had a wee closer look at it and it comes off quite easily and is just on the surface so I think I'll use something just to stop it getting any worse.
