A 94 L Trophy 900, 47400, full yr mot, generally good condition apart from a bent centre stand (as the back wheel wont turn when it's up) and no/faulty neutral light, it worked at first then after a short run (about a mile) it didn't, but when I put the side stand down the engine cut out (obviously a safety thing) but still no neutral light

Seemingly just had a new cam fitted but proof from seller who's a garage too I think, and only the green slip but didn't mention till I got there mmmm

He wants 700 (on the bay for 750ono) I meant to offer 650

the neutral light is a fairly common problem, sometimes you can put a small washer under it and it works, sometimes you need to replace the switch. personally I wonder if it is worth it, if mine packed up i wouldnt bother .
Yes the side stand is a safety device, nothing wrong there.
Obviously if it has had work done you need to assess if it was done properly and not bodged. These engines are strong but there are many bad ones about , I am in a few forums and see them all the time. Have a look in http://www.triumphrat.net/ forum, do a search for alexibrow's posts, he had a trophy and it tells you all his woes, a good read.
Make sure the battery is good, if not the starter clutch will go ( sprag) and this can be expensive, having said that, if you have a square removable cover on the engine below the carbs you can access the starter from there, on later bikes like mine you need to break the engine to replace ( yes it happened to me).
How does it start up from cold?? does it run smoothly and tick over nicely at 1000 rpm or slightly below when hot ?? Has it ever been serviced?? I am assuming as it has had a cam done the valves have been checked and shimmed but maybe not. They do sound quite agricultural at tickover, mine is like a sack of spanners, but it doesnt seem to be anything to worry about from what people say.
You have a lot of bike there for your money it is a very low price, but then again you can have plenty of problems too.
You have to go with your gut feeling in the end I think.
My Sprint ( basically the same as yours just sportier and a later model) cost me 900 quid 4 yrs ago and quite a lot since but it is a great bike. Good luck

Thanks for the reply and writing all that..

The main worry is that he's only got the green slip and its to old (last taxed sept 2013) so he'll need to get a new one before anyone can tax it

I know I suppose they do....only consultation is that he said if I wanted to leave a dep and he'd let me know when it was there

    But apart from that....keep looking

there are loads out there mate, not that cheap tho. I would advise not jumping in,take your time and choose wisely

    I assume you mean consolation?

biglad, I dont think the neutral light has any significance to an MOT,in fact my examiner has never looked at mine,I know coz he lets you sit on the bike and do the lights, braking etc, he just looks at the lights to see they work and checks his meter for the braking efficiency, checks suspension chain tyres ,thats about it really.

I have bought two trophy 900 in recent years one with 70,000 1993 and the other with 55,000 1992 on the clock, I have done both up and sold one and kept the 55,000 one, I did not have to look far to find a half good one that was genuine

So I would agree with others get a genuine one with the correct paper work or you could be sorry and find it was stolen or made up from bits or there is a dept on it,

Take your time and do an HPI on it before handing any cash over, I normally do that on the spot at the time I am looking at it.
    Keith.
