Triumph Speed Triple 1050 Se 2010 I do 60 miles per day and this morning it is not starting Temperature was down to -1c last night and the bike is garaged. Yesterday morning it 'just' started, and in the afternoon it had no problem, but this morning is a no go. It turns over one crank (3 pistons) and then the starter cuts off and I get the whine as the compression is released. So I get a - chug, chug, chug, whine I tried this about five times but stopped as I don't want to flood the engine. The battery is less than 1 year old and is showing 12.6v, it is on charge now though. Side stand is up In neutral Clutch in Kill switch is in correct position Does anyone else have this problem in low temperatures, is there a quick fix so I can get to work this morning rather than wait for it to finish the charge?
Battery is still charging, but I have ordered a replacement - Motobatt MBTX12U Their website says this is the correct one for my bike and has a higher CCA of 200 compared to the current CCA of 180 on the Yuasa YTX12-BS www.motobatt.com Delboys Garage fitted one to a Tiger and the crank speed on start was twice that of the original. Cost £50 plus delivery from M&P (£8.50 next day) Hopefully I will get to work for this afternoon Thanks for your replies guys
Nice one RT. Motobatt good, I also had a gizmo on my Bonnie SE which prevented headlamp coming on when trying to start. Then a flick of dip switch brought headlamp on.
3 hours of charge and I was good enough to get the bike going. Seems the cold just drained the battery, or my bike isn't charging it enough, doing 60 miles a day should be plenty to keep the battery topped up of course. I will run the multimeter over the bike and see what charge is going through...
I think what RR is talking about is an after-market cable option that fits within the headlamp but means that the headlight doesn't automatically come on, when you try to start the bike, thereby concerning battery power. From memory it's a plug 'n play option available via Ebay.
cold weather can kill batteries. a battery can show power as yours did at 12.6 volts but when you try to use it,ie to start, there is not enough in there to turn the starter. I would be careful with the old battery and not overdo the trying to start bit, you could end up screwing up the sprag clutch. the motobatt will be great, you will see a difference straight away, and yes I have one on my Sprint.
this might be a help http://www.squaredeals-ltd.co.uk/ea...models-rocket-3-street-triple-etc-20924-p.asp
Cheers for this Crispey, but at £40 it is pretty much the same price as the battery I have bought. Why us it wiring looms/accessories are so expensive Thanks for linking though. I have not used Square Desls yet but will look at them in future, they are mentioned quite a bit on here.
Fitted the Motobatt last night, now I have a nice and positive start. No chug chug chug, she now goes CHChCh vroom. (I have never been particularly good at onomatopoeia)
Dam it looks like l may need to fork out for one of those motobat battery's as well and , or get the headlights cut off. Anyway know anywhere in London to fit one or so most workshops do them easy
I have learnt a lot since my problems. The wiring loom thing didn't work for me due to not enough room to install behind each headlight On my 2010 Speed Triple I have upgraded the wire loom from the stator to a new rectifier and the wires go direct to the battery, bike now charges at almost 1volt higher I also upgraded the loom to the starter motor Replacing the existing wires with higher guage=less resistance, so I get a better charge and a stronger start
