I am new to riding and looking to get my first bike. I want to get a Bonneville and see a 1977 T140 with only 2500 miles for $4800. Trying to decide if I go with the older bike or something newer. I see a 2006 with 3500 miles for $4200 or a 2014 with 20K for about the same. Would you advise going with something newer as a first bike? I like the idea of having a bike from my birth year but worry about reliability.

Personally I would go for the newer. But that's just me. The 77 Bonnie's had a lot of weakness's as it was the time of the cooperative. And things were going on bikes were thrown together just to try to keep the factory afloat. Is it a Jubilee model. But go with your heart mate. Do drop us all a picture of the choice.
    Regards
    Joe

    Hi, GV and welcome.:)
If you want a bike to ride then go modern.
If you want a bike to teach you the art of motorcycle maintenance (where have I heard that before?) then go for the older model. An added benefit would be that it will only appreciate in value if properly serviced etc., although it will never be worth a fortune.
Not sure about which of the newer options I would go for. A 5 year old bike that has only done 4,000 miles per year - with a decent service record - could be a better bet than a 13 year old bike that has just sat collecting dust and rust for most of its life. But it may be that all it needs is rescuing - two new tyres, new brake pads, battery, oil and filter, and possibly a new air filter. Only you can tell. Check them both closely.

Welcome to the madhouse you should fit right. To keep the inmates happy we will need photos.
Start with a newer bike first if you don't know your way around fixing bike's. Or just go with your heart and buy a BLACK one as they go faster and don't break down.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes and advice. I was kinda leaning towards something newer, so this is helpful in confirming my thoughts. Hopefully be posting some photos of my first bike soon!

I have a new non Triumph and a 1966 Bonnie - I suggest you go newer for your first ride and to gain experience.

Once you get the hang of it then try the old poor brakes etc bikes - you'll appreciate the character more then too..

Good luck with whatever you choose..

Welcome aboard buddy. Enjoy the ride when you've made your choice. I your situation I'd buy modern.
