Thanks Adie , it certainly helps as I have found out with other projects if there are plenty of threads to read through on the subject as references , that 71 will be a cracker too I am sure ,I will look out for the impending read
Had a chat with some mates and it's probably a case of 68 on could still be using some in stock standard flat nuts as i still have flat nuts on my 69 engine mounts and cases that i had forgotten about until our chat but my 70 has the Cleveloc so even i am a bit confused now, conclusion is that a mixture of nuts and bolts got used up in what should have been a change from Whitworth to UNF/UNC in 68 dragged on into 69 and 70.
Ahh ok , Thats probably it , so In my case I could probably use either without it being too much of a crime . I think I may switch some around to clevelocs and plain washers , nothings been fully tightened as yet . My parts book is the 69 american version . Fitted the sliders to the stanrions yesterday just need to draw them into the yokes . I ended up taking a mm off the top bronze bush sholder and using 1mm washer as at first when I screwed the dustcovers on it left unsightly threads showing , but now its all good . Also the plastic damper sleeves were too tight so wet and dried them to give a good fit otherwise they would have to have been forced in . Thats repro parts all over jn my experience . Is the practis to pull the forks into the yokes so the stantion is mear the top of the yoke , then tighten the pinch bolt remove puller and fit nut , loosenpinch bolt then fully tighten top nut then re tighten pinch bolt ? Should there ne a washer o ring under this chrome top nut as i dont have any ? Thanks in advance .
Good idea to tighten top nut/bolt then pinch bolt No washer but you can use PTFE tape on threads or a sealer.
After building up the forks I fitted them , was expecting more tension on the springs but not so much which was good as was worried my puller would mark the top yoke .
Thinking a about keys today , I have replaced the steering lock which came with two keys , I have the original ignition switch but sadly no keys . Were these bike supplied with a shared key for steering lock and ignition ? Maybe its possible to change the wafers on my new lock to match ignition? and order a key from the code on my original ignition . Thoughts appreciated
Oh ok thanks , two keys then . I need to get all the decals sorted for the bike , should these all be waterslides just laid on top and not laquered apart from the tank one perhaps ?
Should all be waterslide and on top but some people like them under lacquer, no harm in going over on tank.
Thanks Darkman, I will have a search around , most suppliers seem to have a few but not all and most are stickers and not water slides or is that ok , Tricor andy says his are all stickers? Starting to get a bit stuck now , waiting on stuff
A word of warning. If you do get modern "sticker" types, do check that the material is definitely suitable for clear lacquer overcoating. I had a modern Triumph decal put on a colour coded helmet and the lacquer bubbled the decal so the whole lot had to be stripped back and done again.
Thanks for the warning , sounds a nightmare , luckily I found a Brit bike shop in Austria that seems to keep the full range and in waterslides so should be ok , assuming he doesnt email back and say out of stock .. I havent put a waterslide on since I was about 16 and on an airfix kit Lancaster bomber if I recall . I seem to remember ruining some with tears. Hopefully the impatience of youth and hope I have learnt something in the last 35 odd years since .
There's not much I can do on the project at the moment which is frustrating , waiting on wheel rims from the chromers which could be a couple more weeks . Crank should be ready any day soon though which if it does means I can get stuck in and get it back together. I have a front mudguard on order which is going to take longer than planned to arrive but hopefully mid next week I will be either painting or engine rebuilding . The only thing on the bike today was refreshing the speedo drive , giving it a thorough degreasing and spruce up new paint and new grease. Reassembled the brake light switch , just needs a coat of something black to finish .
Thanks Darkman , I new you wouldnt miss that yes need one of those stickers , the only one the Austrian shop didnt have !
One thing I was disappointed with today was ,I just put on for the first time the tool box side cover and found it doesn't fit particularly well , when fully seated on the rubbers tight and parallel to the frame the fixing hole doesnt line up nicely ie when you fit thum screw and to get it to line up with the cage nut it pulls the bottom rubber off its peg more than I would like , maybe thats just the way they are ? It looks an original item so maybe just have to live with it , is this typical?
They all sit at different parts along the pins, you can make them better but before paint. Look at others and most are like yours
