So, after plenty of thinking about heating my ‘proper’ home I’ve been thinking and planning to build a ‘Rocket stove mass heater’ and want to know if anyone on here has built one or a version of one?
I’ve used various forms of heating over the years and non really did the job either nicely, cheap, fume free, moisture free or quietly.
I’ve come to the conclusion I’m going to have to make my new system bespoke as I’m a fussy perfectionist.

Or you could use a fan heater........

If by ‘man cave’ you mean shed or garage you will sacrifice too much space to incorporate a mass heater - unless you think Roman hypocaust!

Given the amount of time spent in workshops it is often cheaper to heat the immediate work area than to insulate and heat the lot.

I use an oil filled electric radiator with a thermostat that you can set to frost free, so far it's been very economical as long as you keep it on the lowest setting, please don't use fan heaters they are dangerous and very expensive to use.

I did at one stage temporary plumb old used rads in when we bought the house and built the garage, but a lot of the time we don’t use our CH as we’ve a red hot wood burner which warms the house and I always get wood for free.

This is a basic rocket stove, a little like a ‘ram air’. It uses only a third wood for heat created. The ‘mass’ part is a body it sits around it to hold heat, possibly with heat bricks in. It generally has a draw through it like a carburettor, I’m guessing that as it’s a narrow diameter because that’s how it works most effectively.
This is not the actual one I have in mind but it shows it working in principle.

Used to have one that when lit I'd slowly push car bumpers into it and make lotsa pipe shite bellowing!!
This’ll be the mk 2 advanced furnace I’m building. These things in the ‘rocket’ format burn super clean!!

Why not try kingspan 100 mm insulation all round and you may not need heat

As long as you can remove the products of combustion from your occupied area the rocket looks the nuts.

If you pre-select wood as your fuel you narrow your options to some sort of stove which means air supply, flue and building regs!
Your preferred burner uses a longer heat exchanger that reduces flue temperatures which in turn will make it more sensitive to draw and smoking problems, never mind all the residues that themselves eventually catch fire in the flue!
There is therefore a virtue in simplicity like a pot belly boiler where the flue is only insulated where it passes through a structure. If you can get plentiful free wood the burn efficiency is less of a factor.
You cannot over insulate - including your heat sink floor. I seem to remember each human being gives off about the same as an old 2 bar heater! Your stove? It needs a draught :D
I would not so lightly dismiss a modern fan heater with thermostat while you consider your options. You don’t need a ferocious space heater to warm you and the immediate work area.
