Just purchased an RG Fender Extender for my new 2017 R and while it will help protect the coolant radiator from road debris, the oil cooler will still be exposed. I can find RG (don't want the more obstructing competing brand) oil cooler guards for the pre-2016 Speed Triple (at least on my usual accessory sites here in the US) but not the 2016-2017. I suspect the radiators have not changed on the Speed Triple in several generations but can anyone tell me if a guard for a pre-2016 will fit on a 2017 before I order one ? Thanks in advance for the information. Loving the balance and competence of the Speed Triple. Gary Dunham San Antonio, Texas
Disregard. Bought an R&G front fender extender and the thing comes down below the level of the bottom of the oil cooler. That should significantly reduce the chance of road debris dicking up the radiator.
Thanks mucho, David. I initially had concern that the fender extender would come off a little, "1956 AJS" front fender but it actually does not stand out and is quite acceptable. I understand about the street hooligan/sport bike look for the abbreviated front fenders but having a rapidly turning front wheel flipping up all manner of road crap onto delicately formed aluminum radiators never has sat well with me and a front fender extender is always one of my first modifications on a new (to me) bike. I posted my bona fides in the Newbie section last week...
If it was me I’d still put a guard on the oil cooler because although it looks like the mudguard extender will do the job I wouldn’t be surprised if it still comes up short (pun intended) and only protect the water rad.
Although, I'm still considering an oil radiator guard and R&G makes one. If one's oil radiator is punctured then the next step I'm quite sure is crashing. And as we all know, crashing sucks.
Opted for the black extender in place of the carbon fiber look. If it's not real CF, then it's OK to look like plastic (which it is). Seems to fit fine. A bit nerve racking drilling into CF (my first time) but it worked out well. The roads have struggled to remain dry for the past 2 weeks (total ownership time of the Speed3R) here in south central Texas and I am loath to get my show room clean new bike filthy just yet.
I found Evotech products to be of better quality than R&G https://www.reactiveparts.com/performance/guards/triumph/triumph-speed-triple.html or if you need both; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EVOTECH-...-TRIUMPH-SPEED-TRIPLE-2016-2018-/263128510007
Poo Thanks for the link. Evotech makes quality kit. Had an Evotech coolant radiator guard on a 2009 Kawasaki Versys I used to own. Had to remove it in the summer due to the temperatures in the summer in south Texas. Never overheated but I always felt like it wouldn't flow enough air because of the design. Anyone out there with this guard on their Triple in hot climates ?
Ordered and received an R&G oil cooler guard and can answer my own question in that, yes, the 2011 to 2015 guard fits the 2017 S3R. Pictures to follow. I'll mount it in the AM.
