My 1992 Trident 900 has suffered from the infamous broken bolt on the clutch side. I removed the shaft before reading the various threads on the matter. So the washer has dropped into the engine. Is there an easy way to get it out and refit it? If I have to split the crankcases, can this be done with the top part of the engine still in the frame? can the cylinder head be left in place while the crankcase is split?(I assume the timing chain & cams will still need to be removed). Sorry if some of these questions seem naive but my expertise is in old British bikes.
Drain the oil and remove the oil filter. I doubt that it will appear by doing that but at least you are well on the way to removing the sump which is possibly where it has come to rest. With a bit of luck that will be all that is needed. Fingers crossed!
On a 92 there should be an access plate on the top RHS of the crankcase behind no3 cylinder. You will likely have to remove the clutch assembly and the sprag clutch out so you should be able to recover the dropped part and reassemble it all without a total strip down.
Did that then removed the sump- nothing there unfortunately. Its the later engine without the access plate
Then your 92' trident has a later motor and as such will require removal from the frame and the bottom end of the motor & gearbox stripping down
Thought that would be the case - just hoped someone knew of a quick fix. Back to the garage. Thanks to all who responded
Hi, when I've looked at this again I am starting to doubt whether anything has dropped as the inners seem pretty tight between the bearings. Starting from the alternator side I have the bearing secured into the housing, a spacer washer, a splined cog about 70mm ish long which butts up to the splined insert in the bearing on the clutch side. I've down loaded an exploded view but its not clear to me that there should be another washer at the clutch end. Help!
