Connecting Satnav To Switched Circuit

Ok ladies and laddies,
I am a total lectricnumpty! I want to connect my satnav through a switched circuit on my tiger, can I just connect the live wire to a fuse in the fuse box or is that a bit Heath Robinson?

You can take a wire from your battery and put a fuse in the red line and that would do, but the connection to the sat would all ways be live

 

Yeah thanks, I have it connected to the battery at the moment. I want it to only get power when ignition is on. Would this happen if I connected it to a fuse? Is that possible?

Steve, you could always piggy back the live spade connector at the horn. On my XC the horns under the beak.
That'll give you a switched live connection.
Looks like quite a few Tiger forum members have successfully powered their sat navs this way.

Haven't tried this myself as I don't own a sat nav for any of my bikes.

I took my power from the sidelight. Easy to get the wire from the sat nav into the headlight and easy access to power once in there.

Don't use the headlight feed, if you do that you have to be aware that your sat nav will work fine during the day and at night when on dip beam but will switch off when you select main beam.

Resolved using @Tiglet s link! Bloody simple even for me. On my horn it's the blue and black wire you want to piggyback to.

Followed the tips to identify power from horn - I get 12v at the horn end and also at the connector for the satnav (tomtom rider) but when I connect the cable the screen continues to show battery power ie; not the lightning charging sign. Doesn't matter if ignition on or off. Horn works fine

Am I missing something?

 

sorry forgot to add;
2005 955i Daytona
Live wire is orange, earth is purple colour (can't locate a wiring diagram to check lead colours)
Although just noticed that when it is fully charged on the mains it also goes to battery sign - does that mean it only shows lightning when it needs a charge?

 

Think you might of answered your own question mate
Try running the sat nav down a bit and then try it again and see if the lightning/charging sign comes on

 

It didn't work - attached with 50% battery usage and no lightning bolt.

Checked voltage between 2 power contacts on mounting pad 4.5-5V only; I presume it should be higher? No increase when engine revved.

Next steps before I hand over to a workshop?

Sounds like you’ve got power to the mounting pad if you are getting 4.5 to 5 volts on the contacts, don’t sat navs run on 5 volts? My car one does. Can’t explain why yours doesn’t appear to be charging unless it’s faulty.

 

I’m as confused as you are. If your horn only works when the power is on and you are taking a feed from that to your sat nav with the pos cable and you’ve earthed the sat nav to the frame or similar, not the horn earth, then it can only be switched power. Because if the horn hasn’t got power nothing else attached to it should

 

Looked on tomtom website - charger should provide 5v so it appears the feed is ok all the way to the unit itself.

Hope its not the unit - but if it was would it not charge on the mains either?
