Suspension Settings

    Hi everyone,

    I spent some time thinking about my 2016 S3R suspension setup today and I wanted to hear back from other riders.

    Let's use the rear preload as a given (as it is not allowed to be modified according to the manual) I end up having 15mm of static sag and 39mm of rider sag (I weight about 79kg without gear)
    This is 30% of the total rear shock throw (130mm)

    Then, the next step is to adjust the fork preload to have a matching fork sink, in order to acheive a horizontal and even sink of the whole frame.

    On the front we have 120mm of throw, and I ended up with 43mm of rider sag. that is 36% of the total throw, so I wouldn't go any further out.
    These 43mm of front sag measured along the fork convert into 39mm of true vertical drop due to the rake angle.

    Now, I theoretically should have a flat unladed bike and a 39mm lower laden bike (39mm both fore and aft)
    What puzzles me is that when I sit on the bike I can see the headlight beam rise slightly which means that the bike doesn't sag evenly in spite of the above attempt to level both sag and preload.

    Does anyone notice the same phenomenon or has any benchmark to share?

    I am just a over 80kg and dropped my yokes down the legs 10mm to put more of my weight over the front end and found it helped :)

    Despite what the manual says, I've fussed about with rear preload to set my sag. The adjustment mechanism is there, after all (at least on my 2014 model it is). If it ain't broke, I'll break it.

    Thus far, I've lived to tell.

    Absolutely. no reason not to adjust the rear preload.

    Agreed,

    I set a tie rap on the fork to monitor the throws throughout a couple runs with heavy loadings. So far so good, I'm 20mm away from bottoming.

    As per the rear shock, my rider sag is spot on with 30% of its total throw, assuming 30% is the target for rider sag. Does it sounds right to you guys?

    i find the ride on mine a tad too stiff i will need to look at handbook,going to try slight adjustments to soften the suspension.

    Hi. May be I’m a bit thick, but I’ve never heard of throws. What are throws?

    just big covers the Mrs uses them on new sofa to protect it from the dog l.o.l.

    the rear on mine feels like it's a hardtail.

    I have just had my 17 R revalved front and rear as it was too stiff on the softest damping settings. I weigh 75kg without gear and was getting kicked out of the seat and thrown off line mid corner on bumpy back roads. I haven’t tried the new settings in anger yet but had an hour out on Sunday and the suspension is more compliant now. Still firm but able to absorb harsh bumps. I was a bit annoyed that the factory damping adjustment was so firm given I have had other ohlins equipped bikes where the road damping was spot on from new. The suspension guy told me the road testing for triumph is carried out in south east Spain where the roads are smooth as glass which might explain it.
