I need some advice from our more experienced trumpers :) I recently purchased a Sprint 1050 ST 2006 with only 18700Klms on it in pristine condition, my first ever trumpy and I am sold, my previous rides were a mix of dukes and guzzi's, the service book says it was last serviced in 2011 at 18400Klms and given the 3 year period (or Klms) before next service, should I be concerned? It has now 21783Klms on it, should I take it in for a service just to be sure? the oil looks fine but I think tappets/valves are a little noisey, I have also read that the rear wheel bearing should be swapped out for a new one every 20k is this true? also I have purchased handle bar extenders (32mm) for it and I believe the brake cable will need extending as it is at full stretch, will a GT brake cable fit as they have higher handle bars as standard?, also I have noticed that when steering into right hand corners the bike dips into the corner rather too quickly, I have adjusted the front fork dampers but it still does it, its a tad unnerving, any thoughts?

    Welcome to the forum Gr.....
Definitely change the oil and filter, if it was last done in 2011
Valves are safer a bit on the slacker side, have them checked at the next scheduled service.
Cable just needs measuring and make sure both ends are compatible.
    Bearing ???? Could last 100,000 ????
Dipping in corners, check tyre profile, fork oil levels, any trapped wiring or cables.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome :) and for the advice I found a company here that will make a cable to custom suit, booked in for minor service and to get all bearings regreased and checked, happy riding all.

Hi Fello Trumpies, whilst having a coffe after a great set of twisties in the blue mountains I noticed oil runs on the breather hole in the middle of my fairing right hand side, upon fruther investigations I saw an oil trail running down the right hand side of the top of the engine block, I removed the fairing and wiped the oil away and noticed the wire harness above the top of the motor and behind the steering shaft covered in a clear green oil (So probably not engine oil), its not the front brake resevoir, and I am at a loss as to what it may be, I am about to remove the tank to look from the top down.

Has anyone had this issue before? Or possible inform me to look for specific things.

Hi Grrrry and welcome in to the Triumph Asylum - Nursie will be round soon with your 'Meds' !!

Re the traces of green fluid : the only green fluid I would expect on your bike would be coolant. Brake fluid is clear, engine oil is normally golden brown or if if it's Silkolene it'll be red.

So I would be checking your coolant level. Check/adjust when the engine is warm. If you top up when the engine is cold, it'll chuck it out once warmed up.

If you haven't already done it, give the ol' girl an engine oil and filter change straightaway. It'll take you ten mins and a few bucks, so why wouldn't you ?

Really good advice thankyou, but coolant I dont think so as it is not coolant green but a light olive green and definitely an oil product, there is a rubber housing (almost semi cup like) around the wire harness and it contained about 20ml of this liquid in it, definitely oil.

I just ordered K&N oilf filter and air filter to change the oil and was looking at a ful synthetic oil either a 15W50 or 10W 40, what would you suggest?

Welcome Gr....ry. I've just spoken to one of the techs here at work. He's never seen green fork oil but has seen green Castrol engine oil when he worked in Germany. But there is a possibility you have a crack somewhere allowing coolant to mix with your engine oil and giving the resultant leak a greenish colour. You should get the engine and seals checked over in case.

Deffo 10w-40, unless you envisage ambient temps constantly in excess of 40°c, then go for 10w-50 assuming you can get it. Make sure it's motorbike specific oil and up to JASO standards. Re the oil filter, if you can get them I would suggest a HiFlo 204 jobby, not K&N and very much NOT the K&N with the nut on top of the filter - they have been having big problems with that one.

Welcome and definately be wary of K&N filters with the nut on.
As DD said look at the thread in the technical section also google it as well.
It’s not just trumpets that have been having problems with them.

thanks everyone, Dead Eye you were spot on it was a mix of coolant and engine oil :), as to using K&N I headed all your warnings read the threads and googled users comments - Hi-Flo oil filter it is. TheBigLad, in summer it is usually around the 28c - 36c mark every day in summer so 10w40 will be sifficient.

Reall appreciate all your feedback gents happy riding.

Thanks All for your excellent insights and advice, went with Redline 10w40 full synthetic oil and changed the K&N oil filter to the none screw top one, and all is good :)

Another question is the front brakes are not the best and in heavey braking it it jitters and feels as if the tyre is about to let go, that is just the feel through the brake leaver and handle bar, I put a set of Pirelli Angel GT's on the bike and they are brilliant and very grippy, my question is:

    a) would upgrading the brakes to ABS (from a 2007 machine) be a better option?
    b) Can anyone advise if another model triumph or another brand would fit and make a difference.

    Cheers
