Hi guys, I have recently purchased a 1996 trophy 1200, at higher speeds it seems to be loosing power and if i keep going it will cut out completely (i found this out on the m1) and will not start again. The following day however it did start no problem and since then i've done a 2 hour ride at low speed going no higher than 50mph which was also fine. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance Andy
Entirely plausible. Next time it happens, when you have rolled to a stop, slowly open the filler cap and listen for air rushing into the tank. If you hear it, you have your answer. I don't know if others do it, but my tank 'sings' as it breathes when the tank warms up e.g.in direct sunlight etc. Okay, my tank is black and will get warm quite quickly but it is (I think) the same filler cap on both bikes. Or maybe my Trident is just a happy chappy?
I would suggest if you have the situation that @stevethegoolie suggests then you have a blockage in the tank breather and opening the cap to release the vacuum will allow you to re-prime the carbs and ride on. If not them its more probable that you have blocked fuel filter/s in either the tank @ the fuel tap filter or in the hoses at the T pieces between the carbs, either of which will need a strip and clean / replace the filters to solve. **** the fuel tap filter is only available as part of the tap assembly about £60+ ****
Just a thought, but if the fuel tank filter is blocked, why not scrap the filter (if that's possible) and put a cheapy in-line filter in between the tap and the carbs ? Only costs a couple of quid or so and means an easy replacement in the future. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Air-Inta.../i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=motorcycle+fuel+filter
Theres not a lot of room under the tank if its like my 900 and he would need 2 filters one for each fuel line but that leaves the tap unprotected from dirt & crap getting in around the diaphragm and stopping it shutting off properly as the vac tap has no off position.
Sorry dave wasn't intending it to sound like that was only commenting, sometimes its hard to explain and get across how its meant. Your suggestion is another option , having just been under there and put it all back, including a tank that was over half full and the tap wasn't shutting off ..... I hate being covered in petrol . I'm no expert on these bikes either at this stage, and am on a steep learning curve as I work my way through mine sorting the PO's handi-work I'll take some pics as I go along and start a new thread some day, some of it's frightening.
