Busy refurbing my T509 which has been stood for around a decade. Bit of a learning curve. Decided to do a partial strip and address only the immediate problems. Fortunately, she's not seized. Careful oil into the pistons and left standing for 2 weeks then crank over by hand after taking off the clutch cover. Restoring the engine case front where the paint had come away in sheets. Refurbed the fan/rad assembly where the fan motor looked like flaky pastry!. Looking foward to starting to reassemble it all! Would very much like a Mk1 Speed Triple too Came here initially to check on the K&N filter failure issue. As it happens I just bought one (yes, the bad type) which is sitting on my bench waiting to be fitted. I guess I'm going to have to bin it and get an alternative I also decided to have a look at the old chestnut about cardboard gaskets. I used to make them for my pre-unit Triumph and never had any issues. The secret was always to soak for quite a while in used (not clean) engine oil, which sealed them as long as nipped up tightly. Nothing to lose trying on the clutch cover as an experiment. Gasket made now. Will post photos and report back to what degree successful Will put photos here: https://www.thetriumphforum.com/gallery/albums/t509-1998-refurb-and-overhaul.342/

I agree and yes, excellent article! Not sure I could relax knowing it could dump the oil out all over the rear tyre. Bought from ebay so I guess I'll have to take it on the chin and order an alternative
