    Tho id rather it didn't.

Was out on a "brisk" bimble a few days ago when I heard a pop from around the gear lever area .. didn't think much of it til I spotted the drips of oil under the bike when I parked. I think (emphasis on the think) that the oil seal on the gear lever shaft may have gone ... when cold no drips .. when hot she marks her spot. Its a 2000 955i ... Has anyone else had this problem ... And if so is it easy to fix ..

Or alternatively ..Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what may be leaking .. Checked sump plug ... sump gasket .. pretty much every poss oil line that I can think of. Had the sprocket cover off and it seems oily hence my suspicions of the gear lever oil seal

    Thanks All

Hi Toad, the oil under the front sprocket cover sounds like accumulated chain lube to me, but that depends on what you lubke with?

Have you checked your crankcase breather, if it's blocked that could cause the symptoms you describe.

Well I may have found the problem ,,, tho as yet not had a chance to confirm ... The torque settings for the front sprocket are 132Nm (converted to 90odd ft lbs) .. mine seems to be held on by the tab washer. and is not even finger tight.. whoever put the last chain on clearly hasn't torqued it up. Am guessing as its attached to the gearbox .. there will be an oil seal behind the front sprocket which is moving excessively .. And could also answer why it only leaks when under load ..

Right boys n gals .. me again .. ive found a pipe .. sits just about above the swing arm spindle ...just in front of swing arm ... theres a plastic plug in there but the plug has been flattened out of shape .. seems to possibly go to the airbox .. but that's where the oil is coming from ,,, any ideas on what breather it is .. someone mentioned crankcase breather but this literally seems to come out of the airbox

The crankcase breather should be situated on the camshaft cover with a tube leading to the air box. Inside the breather will be a wire mesh that is supposed to trap the oily residue but still leaves the oily air free to flow into the airbox to be drawn into the engine along with clean air through the filter. I'd guess that after 17 years it's likely to be clogged up leading to an increase in pressure in the crankcase and the pop you heard (could you be certain it was from the gear lever area) was a seal popping somewhere. The tube you describe could be a drain from the airbox. Give the breather a good clean, including the tube to the airbox, thoroughly clean all the crud from near the gearbox sprocket and gear lever shaft and inspect the seals for leakage. Hopefully that should sort the problem. Best of luck.

Thanks Yorkshireman .. it turns out the tube is meant to be checked and emptied at every service .. its an airbox drain ... now drained and replugged .. the original plug had been crushed hence the leak. it was jammed down between swing arm and engine ... have now relocated it correctly ... The pop may wel have been the exhaust on the over run .. its loud so hard to tell lol .. But at the moment I think its sorted.. will pop back if its till leaking
