Speaking to my dealer just a wee while ago, he informed me a law change now means you do not need insurance to get road tax, just an MOT, news to me, any else heard this?
Just checked on line about taxing it at a Post Office, sure enough no insurance certificate mentioned EXCEPT for Northern Ireland, how longs this been for?
It states a valid MOT is required, no mention of certificate, now I'd have thought if insurance was required to tax they would have said 'valid insurance' even if a certificate was not needed as per wording of MOT if information comes up on line during the Post office renewal procedure.

I'm sure on the Direct Gov site -when you tax a vehicle - it states checking mot details and insurance cover.

When I get me 'kin car back and I can get down to the P.O. I'll ask them.
Just looked at Ask Mid and thats changed, it just has insurance (or not!), no other details, I think it used to show either MOT or tax too.
I'll be taxing it on line Wednesday too all being well.

Taxed it on line, no mention of 'checking MOT and insurance'.

If you wait until you get the log book and tax the vehicle giving the new keeper section number if the previous owner hasn't cancelled their cover the vehicle will automatically be taxed therefore being taxed without you having insurance not the right thing to do and I wouldn't dream of it:) but a loop hole for sure

Think they changed it when they changed the tax rules.
Previously tax when you bought sold a car or bike continued unless the owner sent the tax disc back but now it’s by default that you have to tax it.
No doubt would complicate things if you already owned the car / bike etc so they went that way with it.
When insuring a bike or car it can take a couple of days for insurance to show on the insurers database.
So I think that’s why it’s now just MOT.
