Had to drill out a screw to remove the brush holder, but I have extracted the regulator from the alternator and it seems to be failing all tests.

I may have found the culprit. Just need to source a new 12N08 regulator and hopefully that may fix the issue. Will carry on testing everything else though. Want to make sure this is the culprit and not just a victim.

That was my concern that there may be more than one issue, which is why I suggested the one piece at a time.

    Hey guys.

I think I have now done a basic test on everything electrical. Found this post and so have removed the rectifier and I think I've blown half of it. I assume it's a full bridge rectifier. Anyway, found a new rectifier on a popular auction site for £24. It's actually listed as a bandit part but should be right and a damn site cheaper than Triumph. The same post had a bit more info on the regulator. It appears either the Haynes manual may have incorrect values for the regulator test, or there are huge variations in the component spec. I suspect a different device.
My device seems to match up much better with the ones tested by N5XL so think I'll order a new rectifier and then fit that and retest.

    Fingers crossed.

    Cheers

    Rob.

Just had a re-read and I think you have a dead short on one the wires from the ignition switch, take the connector plug off of the ignition and power the wires one at a time to find which one has shorted out it my be more than one which have melted together but using the wire colours you should be able to trace it:) HTH

The new rectifier has not solved the problem. Think this fault has beaten me. I'm considering calling out an expert. Anyone know of a mobile bike mechanic with a good knowledge of electrics in the Colchester/Ipswich area of the UK ? I've found Mobile Motorcycle Repairs in Chelmsford. Might be the guy unless there is anyone closer.

    Thanks.

    Hey guys, good news.

I think the combination of the new rectifier and a new battery has solved my issues.
Got her running, albeit very badly, switched some coil wires (Which I must have mixed up when disconnecting things) and she runs like a dream.

So I seem to have cooked at least two batteries, one old, one new, which is a tab annoying, but she's running again.
Just need to check my charging circuit and I'm good to go.
I'm off to label up my coil wires.

Thanks for all your help guys.

    Well. It's here.
    M.O.T. day.
25 quid for a list of jobs, or an MOT certificate, but that's pretty unlikely I suspect.
Just hoping for a short list. Fingers crossed.

Still gob smacked, but it squeaked through. Can't believe it, but the old girl is on the road. Still got lots more to do to it. Just looking for excuses to jump on it now. Always need something from the shops.
