No probes. I'll let you know. Doing the NC500 next week so ain't going to tackle a potential problem like this until afterwards. All the best

Ah..... Thanks for that. If there is a sealing washer, by inference the sight glass must unscrew. I'll order the washer and give it ago. Many many thanks. I take it you own a Thunderbird 900.

Strewth... Thought to try how tight the sight glass was threaded into the block. Put 22mm ring spanner onto nut faces and found it was barely finger tight. So friends.... it does unscrew and need to be aware ... take note of my lesson...... haven't touched sight glass ever, and I could have lost it on a run. Nipped it back up because haven't got the sealing washer yet.

You don't need a pair of ring spanners.....just one 22mm

It should not be too tight!

It's like the oil filter, it doesn't need spannering to within an inch of it's life. As soon as the seal bites it should only need another turn, the correct torque setting on the T100 is 10Nm from memory and the sump drain plug is 25Nm.

I would expect the sight glass to be between the two but no more than 25Nm

Just to finalise this item. The sight glass unscrewed easily with a 22mm ring spanner. With a new seal, I refitted the sight glass with ease. Sadly, once removed, it became clear that the inside of the glass was as clean as a whistle. The problem of not seeing the oil level clearly has nothing whatsoever to do with dirt on the inside of the glass. The sight glass is too small to view the level easily ; viewing is best achieved with a powerful torch, and a lot of prayer that you viewed it correctly.

Between half way and three quarters is the operating depth ! To confirm that do an oil change , 4 litres will go to half visi guage and 4.5 will be near top in guage.
I did many oil changes on my 160 thousand klms 94 trident, 4 ltrs was sufficient !
