I've had to be recovered and towed home today

    Diagnostics .....

    • Bike started chugging
    • Looked down and clocks were blank
    • Rev counter wasnt responding
    • Pulled over, stopped the bike
    • Tried to start and it was obvious there was no charge in the battery
    • Roadside assistance came and jumped it off a battery pack
    • Multimeter dropped while bike was idling
    • Towed home
    • Put the bike on charge when I got home
    • Left it 4 hours
    • Battery reads 12.55
    • Bike sweeps and fires up
    • Multimeter drops from 12.55 to 11.55 in about 30 seconds

Personally I think and hope its the alternator

How do I check for definite or does the above point to the right characteristics
What else do I need to check for ?

Sounds like very similar symptoms to regulator/rectifier failure, happened to me a couple of times in the past, it was quite a common issue with with the early Fireblades.

I think you should be getting 13-14V while the bike is running if your no then that's your problem..

Connect another battery on with jump leads, if the bike starts and the symptoms go then its the battery or alternator not generating the power. The symptoms do match the rectifier problems that D600s are prone to though sorry!

The bike started off a battery pack at the roadside but the volts dropped
I'm getting a constant reading off the lead that goes from the stator to the rectifier with the bike off

I too think the rectifier is fried. I reckon its over charged and melted the plug

Yep that looks like your culprit - at least you know what it is now! Do you know someone close with the same bike? could swap the rectifiers and give it a go?

I'm probably going to upgrade rather than replacing like for like ... but yep as a test, its a great idea :upyeah:
Technology has moved on in the last 8 years and the Mosfet R/R is a big step forwards over the original .... so if it is the R/R then thats the way I'll go
