If you do ride your bike through the wintertime period, I was wondering what tyres the good folk here have found to be the most suitable? It struck me that I would be happy to sacrifice wear over grip. Its cheaper to buy another set of tyres than fix a bike you've just slid into a ditch in most cases. So what have you found that gives excellent grip in wet and cold conditions even if they don't last too long?

I think you have answered your own question. Bikers have collectively traded wear for grip and our tyres are much softer and pliable for winter conditions than the wagon wheels of 40 yrs ago. Most car drivers trade the last 20% of grip for durability and it only becomes evident in really icy weather when bikes are sensibly parked.

I have no personal experience, but Heidenau K60 Snowtex seem to be popular here in Norway.
