Soon to pick up my new ride, a 2010 865 SE Bonneville so am just getting garage ready and ordering tools I may (no def will) need.
Anyone out there know what range my new torque wrench should have, i.e min-max. Any recommendations, make, drive etc. I know it's a bit nerdy but I only wanna buy one, so has to do it all. Tahnks.

Ideally you want at least 2, one to cover low ranges and one to cover the medium ranges.
I have 3 a 1/4 ,3/8 and 1/2 inch drive. Between them they cover 10 to 210 nm of force. 1/4 does up to 25 nm, 3/8 does 19 to 119 nm and the 1/2 inch does up to 210 nm.
So depending on what value of torque your Bonny needs up to you could only need 2.
The 1/4 is for small nuts and spark plugs. IMV I wouldn't tighten anything up on an aluminium block with out a torque wrench as its too easy to thread aluminium

My job is calibrating torque wrenches for aircraft industry. I recommend you buy Norbar torque wrenches.
As said ideally you will need 2.
Always store In the lowest setting.

I usually store mine without any tension...then my lowest setting one stopped working, it was only a year old, a Draper off Amazon 10nm to 90nm IIRC
Is it expensive to get them calibrated/repaired - I did a quick search but all results were for industrial type tools

I haven't got a manual yet (will prob'ly go for a haynes) so what would be the highest torque setting on the bike. Safe to say that a small wrench that will go from 10 upwards for the lower settings will be required, but what about the big wrench?

Most like to be in the region of 100 nm but could be higher. Get a Haynes and look to see ( usually at the beginning of each chapter) what the highest one is. Unless anyone on here knows.

I'm starting on my mechanical journey this week, having bought some new suspension and slip-ons for my street twin, which I intend to try and fit myself. I am a complete numpty with anything requiring a spanner, so need some help with which torque wrench I need. There are a couple of recommendations in this thread, are there any other thoughts out there?

    Any assistance greatly appreciated.

I like Teng ones. Sadly very pricey now. Halfords do them, never seen them on "sale" yet.
The main one I use is my Teng one covers 20-190 nm and is 3/8 drive.
1/4 and 1/2 drives are Clark, they seem ok but I'm not a mechanic so they don't exactly get excessive use :)

    Norbar! norbar! Norbar!!!
    buy cheap buy twice.
    Qulity assured. something like the
    TTi50 should be good, 3/8" drive 8-50Nm.
    Also a TtI150 1/2"drive 30-150Nm,
good for about 99% jobs on a bike.
    Big range means limited accuracy.

Mr Crispey helpfully posted all the torque settings for the Bonnie, do a search under his name it's there. On my phone so can't seem to copy and paste the thread. Failing that I am sure he will be around soon!

I'll echo the others and say you should have two.

You'll need the larger one for things like the rear wheel and a smaller one for the engine.

When I changed the front sprocket the settings for the cover bolts is 9Nm.

As said don't try and find one that will cover every eventuality, they are inaccurate and the higher setting ones will be too big, physically to be of much use in the places where you need lower settings.

For some reason the American sites offer more info that than UK sites when it comes to settings, perhaps they are a lot more DIY that we are?

We've covered this in some detail before so there is already good info available.
I went for Halfords Professional and bought two.
    One I believe is 8Nm to 60Nm
    T'other is 60 to 300Nm
These will cover every job on the bike, I think 85Nm is the highest requirement on the Bonnie.
t552 swears by Norbar and calibrates them for a living so I would trust his judgement and go Norbar.
I was told that Norbar make Halfords torque wrenches but cannot 100% verify it.

    Norbar is a brilliant kit. I have 3 of those......I think the ranges are 0-20, 10-60, 60-200Nm.
