Hi all, newbie here, have test rode Thruxton R and loved it and want to purchase one with current perfomance package offer but im reading reports of some poor build quality, ie tarnished metal engine cases even at low miles? can i ask for thoughts from actually owners? Thanks all....
Very early 2016 bike, from the first UK batch delivered. Now approaching 4k miles. Looks like new, but is a bit of a pain to keep really clean, you need small hands and plenty of brushes!!
Like. jenkspj above, I got one from the first batch. Rode it home from the dealers & immediately covered it in ACF50 (particularly the spokes & engine cases). I've given it a couple of light top ups since then, but my bikes still pretty mint. If you fancy one, don't let others reports & opinions put you off mate. I still absolutely love this beautiful machine
Had mine last June and no complaints on the finish, mind you, there’s not much of mine still standard. As said above, fantastic bike and that’s a good offer Triumph are offering on the racer kit. Enjoy.
New 2016 TTR bought in Dec 2016. US model. 4500 Miles. Still looks new, no issues on performance or finish. Yea I know but took lots of vacation recently. Getting ready for new tires and maybe a different exhaust set up. No salty roads here. Back east the crap they throw on roads in the winter will corrode and or rust anything.
My Thruxton R looks pretty well put together BUT I suspect that the bare polished aluminium alloy engine covers won’t last 10 seconds if exposed to road salt - so either don’t ride in the Winter or drown the entire bike (except brakes!) in FS365, and cover the polished metal parts in a nice thick layer of ACF50. Even if you lather it in protective coatings I’d still check after every ride and if necessary wash off all the crud and re-coat in anti-corrosion gunk.
Like any unfaired, spoke polshed alloy wheeled, polished alloy engine cased motorcycle, you will need to treat it with quite a lot of tlc, especially if you are going to use in all weathers. What I would say is this. The 'R' is a fantastic machine in virtually every department. It will not disappoint . I love mine to bits
New be here as well , had my thruxton delivered a month ago wheeled it out of the van then covered it in 365 ,done this to all my bike seems to work a treat ,every other ride rinse down then spray 365 on again keeps the salt at bay
seems to be a common issue on engine casings and clock misting videos on YouTube captain rumbumctions or summit like that,he had issues and had to get warranty remedial works done.
Living in the beautiful Glasgow climate I cannot knock my T120 but defo needs a lot of TLC in this weather. I would have thought British bikes should be built for British weather but unfortunately most parts are built abroad I’d presume. It’s shocking that Jap bikes especially Hondas are more resilient to our weather.
I'm not so sure they are. If you live in a predominantly wet area of the country, bathed in salt from the West, any bike/ car in fact anything metal will deteriorate quicker. My Mum was a Glaswegian, RIP. Dad was in navy at Rosyth, spent year on year north of the border during my early years. Dads cars were always falling to bits with rust. Goes with the geographical territory I'm afraid
Welcome Ian. The Thruxton R is a cracking bike mate. Make sure you use a good wax and/or silicone spray to cover bits likely to tarnish, and if riding through the Winter cover it in ACF50 or similar. Just keep topping up the ACF50 over any dirt until a good wash in the Spring.
Got agree with every thing here, got a tb Lt, bright work is hard to keep together, the finish on modern tri, are a let down, cheapest bidder, ac50 underside, fs365 wheels and top side
Ya what they all said, mine done 3500 miles it was in the show room yesterday after service and it was the best one there, sales man even took a picture, I just keep it clean with auto glem resin polish, cases were buffed up well over a year ago. But its like everything you tresure, you have to look after it, but to not buy one would be one of your life regrets.
