As the spiritual predecessor to todays Street Twin, this baby cost £190 inc tax, in todays money thats £3,909 (according to the ONS). A new Street Twin costs £7800

Average weekly salary was £9 (converted from pre decimal) in 1953

So 1953 annual income was £468, the bike costs 41% of your annual income

Today average annual income is £31,000, a new Street Twin is 25% of your annual income

See the pointless crap I come up with when I get bored

In 1953 the average house price was £2,750 or 17.3 Speed Twins. That would equate to £135k now. Doesn’t work, does it? Beer and Mars bars tend to better indices of purchasing power which, given the rise in the cost of labour, taxation changes etc., is more relevant than pure inflation which is why we have Consumer and Retail Price Indices .....which are themselves manipulated for political ends.
