Frank over at squaredeals.co.uk very kindly sent out the chrome version of the cap I'd chosen and what d'ya know it fits perfectly! He said the version I had bought was from a new supplier and he would have to pull it from the range until he had sorted it out with them.

Poor start for a new supplier, they should have used a simple gauge to check the thread, i.e. A tapped hole.
