It's clear I'm not a techy, being new to bikes I don't have the knowledge to do most things.

I'm reading some other threads and some ST owners (those who tinker) are suggesting removal of the Snorkle, no real power gains but better sound.

Good idea / bad idea, answers on a post card

If good, is it something a talentless knobber can do

It’ll definitely change the tone. I found it to be louder and put the snorkel back on.

It will not hurt anything. just remove one phillips screw and wiggle it off. little more induction noise upon acceleration and i like it. to each his/her own.

    Repooh.
Just done the same to my Bonnie it does make the acceleration sound meaty. The Sprint has a secondary a mesh type in situ but that's a much bigger job and a lot of messing but again it really gives it a lot more growl. And also the k & N filter helps.
