Hi, I recently had the misfortune to have my bike on its left side, no real damage but. The engine did not cut out and there was fuel leaking out, Is this normal? Surely this could have caused a major incident with fire, I'm worried about riding it given what happened, Any advice please??
Hi and welcome. I don’t think you should worry too much about riding your bike again. Any fuel that leaked when the bike was down will have evaporated by now. If the bike starts and runs ok I would suggest you get on and ride.
Raezor40 Yes I though it should have cut the engine. But that is not a true statement as it all just depends on each bike and set up. As others say if the bike is healthy just carry on.
Hi Raezor40, you are correct the bike should have cut out, check the tilt switch connection to see if it is loose, it may be a faulty switch, the idea of the tilt switch is to immediately cut the engine (ignition cut off) once the machine is on its side, this prevents anything becoming entangled in the chain as the wheel keeps rotating, (some Triumph models don't have the shark fin fitted), it could be clothing or worse still an arm or leg, the fuel escaping is normal and only a small amount comes out, and it is very very rare a machine catches fire. You can test the tilt switch is operating, all you do is remove the switch keeping it in the correct position (it is marked up), with the bike running literally tilt the switch 180 degrees either left or right, the engine should cut out immediately, an das people have said don't worry do the test, replace the part if necessary and enjoy your bike.
