It’s because cycling is classed as exercising .... whilst driving a car or riding a motorcycle isn’t actually exercising... the mental health benefit of motorcycling doesn’t count which is a shame... but is understandable with the need for a blanket lockdown
Nobody NEEDS a feckin velocipede to exercise, surely? Ken. PS. I know I don’t. PPS. No better exercise than pushing ya M cycle home after ya run outta go juice and are afraid (Very) of touching a petrol pump handle without a flame suit on and zipped up!
I pushed a broken down m/cycle 8 miles, should have just set fire to it and claimed the insurance...the innocence of youth
Just been out on the bike. No not that bike, my bicycle (a mountain bike with regular pedals) and one of the cycle lanes runs parallel to a road. My god the number of motorbikes out was crazy. I saw a few group rides too. So obviously over here in NL bike riding is still allowed (so far). Still wouldn’t fancy having an accident and ending up in hospital. That’s the last place you’d want to end up especially now. Anyway only managed 10km. It was windy and the saddle was bloody uncomfortable.
You don’t know the half of it And the saddle I have is a so called comfortable gell filled one. Wonder if the spare standard seat I have from the VStrom would fit
I must admit, if we need a few essential things that can't wait for a full shop, I'll continue to use the bike and just take a backpack to carry stuff home. I understand the notional risk (in terms of NHS resources) but with very few cars on the road, and by taking things a little more carefully than normal, I don't believe I'm acting irresponsibly. In fact, the benefit to my mental health right now is a positive thing.
There was a time where @andypandy had some discarded mustard ‘away’ from the last Bellingham gmu which after careful riding painted the inside of his big black cavernous top box bright yellow also his stashed meat package (behave lads) and spare gloves all got marinated the same way!!
You are right, @BonnieCat, about not wanting to have an accident and ending up in hospital right now. I was thinking about what it would be like if I'd crashed my bicycle on March 18th rather than January 18th. As it is, I may wind up in the hospital again to have a 2nd surgery on my dang elbow due to ulnar nerve problems. Simpler surgery than the first one but certainly not the best time to be in a hospital or surgery center. And I'm feeling anxious about what could happen if either I or my surgeon gets sick but I need surgery to prevent permanent damage to my arm and hand. Most of my cycling and motorcycling buddies--including my hubby--have either stopped riding their bicycles and motorcycles altogether now or scaled way back. And not wanting to wind up in the hospital is a primary reason. I can't ride either a bicycle or a motorcycle at the moment so the decision has been made for me. I'm not so keen on getting back on my bicycle as that's what landed me my current predicament. But I'm just pining away to ride my motorcycles. So if you get out on one of your bikes, Nikki, please put in a couple of extra miles for me.
I agree, @learningtofly, plus it's not like people in automobile accidents aren't getting hurt. Or people aren't having heart attacks or getting diagnosed with cancer. Other medical needs aren't ceasing because of COVID-19 There's the predicament.
So sorry to hear @Sandi T. that you need more surgery and have to go to hospital. It really is a worrying time. I hope and pray that we all come out of this on the other side. But you pointed out something that I’d not thought of and that is the likelihood of having an accident on my bicycle and needing a visit to a hospital. With my record of bicycle riding and the number of people out on the cycle paths (walking or riding), has already made me decide to do my exercises on my treadmill instead. Mind you I fell over on that once and scraped my elbow. Anyway my best wishes to you and Mr Sandi
Thanks so much for the best wishes, Nikki. Yes, the bicycle/walking path here is nuts right now because everyone is a bit stir crazy and spending more time outdoors on the path. Our path has cyclists, walkers, runners, roller blades, skateboarders, dogs, kids, babies in strollers. I've even seen unicycles! It's very crowded and not particularly safe since people are preoccupied and not paying attention as they should. Mr. Sandi goes out at the oddest hours he can if he will be on the path or he chooses another route altogether. I'm going to borrow a turbo trainer so that I can get back on my bicycle but without needing to balance or put a lot of weight on my arms. My pelvis is still rather weak and my left arm only bends 90º so I'm not ready to actually ride a bicycle yet. But it will be nice to have an alternative to walking. I'm certainly not complaining about walking, though, as two months ago I was in a wheelchair! We make do and adapt, eh?
I like your style Sandi, I really do. I quite like to walk an hour before it gets dark. Most people are sat at home and it’s very quiet. Where I live is a very good neighborhood and it’s very safe. I don’t have any fears about going out later in the evening on my own. The other thing I can’t use is my RV which I bought towards the end of last year. Used it once last year and it’s now standing in my yard. Such a lot of money just sitting there. All countries around us have closed the borders and there are no campsites open anywhere anyway. I wish I could hibernate and wake up when all this virus thing has gone away.
Sorry to hear you’re going to need more surgery @Sandi T. I’m guessing it’ll be delayed for the foreseeable due to the current crisis? If it does go ahead then stay safe and best of luck with it.
