Hi Guys, I started looking into how to mount my satnav and although I can do it I'm not too impressed with my solution. Ideally I'd like to mount it above the clocks and behind my screen, when the screen comes, so it will be unobtrusive. My plan was to make/alter the screen mounting bracket and attach the satnav to this but now don't think there will be enough space. Anyone already done theirs or thought of a good solution?
I bought the triumph sat nav bracket for my Explorer. It positions it securely just above the clocks. You could have a look a using a Ram Mount if Triumph don't offer one for your bike. http://www.ram-mount.co.uk
Thanks for your responses. I too usually use the remembering/planning option but me and the Thruxton are off on 2700 mile trip through Spain and Portugal following a route supplied as a Garmin file and I don't think i'll have enough room for all the maps let alone the cost of them!
Here is my install. I had to replace the fork stem nut with one off a street triple and ran the cable under the tank to the battery. Works great! The mount is a standard RAM mount http://www.rammount.com/search?search_type=search&query=RAM-B-342U
Thanks Bruce, I have seen this mount and was thinking about fitting it in the open bar end but yours is a pretty good solution. For the time being i'm wating until I get my screen to see if I can fit it in there somehow.
I've used a ram mount ball, screwed into one of the clip-on bolts on the LHS (needed to purchase an extended bolt). Short RAM extension bar then into a RAM compatible iPhone case. Works really well, cost about £30. When i'm off the bike, I can either drop it down to just the ball, or leave the plate in place - it's fairly discreet. If you zoom in on the pic you can just about see the plate location.
Hi wafoo I'm really interested in what you have done there, could you give me some more details on specific parts, maybe a closer photo please
Here's the ball mount screwed into the clip-on bolt location. One of the bolts in the pack fits, will need chopping with a dremel or similar for a tidy fit Motorcycle Handlebar Top Clamp M6 Fitting with 1" / 25mm Ball - Use with RAM / SW-Motech Mounts by BuyBits http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GGKXDFW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_udp_api_HcMOxbGTFM6J9 There's also an extender Double Socket Standard Arm 1" Ball https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0074WMQLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6dMOxbBQJVXJW Then I used the RAM mount iphone case Ultimate Addons IPX5 Waterproof Anti Shock Tough Case for iPhone ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00XA4R91G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_udp_api_1eMOxb6D8QJBQ
..the shank beneath the ball doesn't fit exactly into the bolt head recess, but it compresses tightly.
Many thanks wafoo, that's a very quick response, great photo and thanks for the help. I will be copying that for my thruxton when I get her after xmas. I get lost in my own garage, so I'd be useless without SatNav on the bike. Much appreciated
After a bit of a search I found a product from http://www.telferizer.com/ great service and a neat, in my opinion, solution. It's a stock Triumph Yoke Top Nut which is drilled and threaded to accept a ram ball
That looks like they've just drilled a hole in the centre of the top nut and fitted a rivnut, got a rivnut kit in my garage so now I know how I'll do mine if I need to. Clas Ohlson do Ram Mount kits I notice, not sure if they are cheaper though.
£7.99 for the ball mount. http://www.clasohlson.com/uk/Ram-Mounts-Ball-Joint-Adaptor-with-Camera-Threads/Pr386933000
