Today we rode a 3 hours/200 km tour through the Pre-Alps. The weather conditions were interesting. Temperatures from 8-20 degrees celsius, wind from 40-90 km/h and sunny to dark clouds without rain. Our tour started at about 1000 in the morning after we had mounted an other wind screen on my wife's bike. The first one did not satisfy her. Therefore we bought an alternative yesterday. Now she is really happy. In a small cafe we had some local cakes with tee to strengthen and warm us again. On Friday next week we both will have a date with our mechanic. My wife's bike will get the 1000 kk service and mine the 10.000 km service. In the following some pictures. The "new" windscreen. The first windscreen which was not satisfying her. @Tigcraft: This is our "early year beginner tour", to get my wife used to her new bike under all possible road conditions. Our tour started south of Wr. Neustadt on a street called B54. Along the B54 we passed Aspang, Mönichkirchen, Hartberg. Then Pöllauberg bei Hartberg - reaching the street B72 to Birkfeld. In this section be aware of suddenly upcoming serpentines! There are no signs along the road announcing them! From there across a small pre-alpin section, the Alpl to Krieglach. The last part across the highway S6 over the mountain Semmering back to the south of Wr. Neustadt. If you want you can go for another 60 km, then you will come to the capital city if Austria, Vienna.
I am pleased your wife's new screen is suiting her better - from the looks of the mango cheesecake I think I'd ride a long way for it!!
Take it that it’s all vineyards round there? My plan is (hopefully it will happen) to do the circumference of Austria if possible. My interest is eastern side but not Vienna, I want to start at the very north sampling the small towns there and head down towards Graz, passing either east or west side of Vienna and stopping at Bruck an der Mur then st Stefan im gailtal and from there I’ll just make my journey up as I go along.
@Tigcraft: You may start in Hardegg, near the northern border of Austria. Ride trough the Thayatal to Niederfladnitz. From there through the Kamptal via Gars am Kamp to Sailingberg. Move on to Spitz in the Donautal and along the river Danube via Ybbs an der Donau to Melk. From there you will step into a pre-alp-section via Puchenstuben to Mariazell.with it's famous cathedral. Your next stop could be Graz, the capital city of the province of Styria. From there you may go via Deutschlandsberg to Soboth following the southern border of Austria to the Gailtal in the province of Carinthia. This route is normally not a one day ride! It summarises a huge amount of great biking routes in Austria. You will pass many vineyards along your way.
