Sunday 21st to Saturday 27th July Scotland Trip following on from GMU2019. The Highlands element will now mainlky cover inland roads rather than the coast. Partly because of logistics I've omitted much of the East side, and partly because Dougie's trip covers much of the West side. Please PM me and add a comment if interested.
An outline idea for routes and stop overs. Some of the route is similar to the ones Dougie has organised, as are some of the stopovers. Happy to take advice on alternatives. Day 1 Sunday: c156m partly scenic Bellingham to Dunkeld (north of Perth). Jessie Macs bunkhouse. Top quality. Day 2 Monday: c165m Dunkeld to Portsoy, lots of coast road taking in Stonehaven Castle*. Overnight at the Sail Loft bunkhouse. Large and modern. I stayed there last year. Day 3 Tuesday: c175m Portsoy to Evanton, along North Coast, Inverness, down the East side of Loch Ness to Fort Augutus, West side to Drumnadrochit, Muir of Ord, Dingwal and Bonar Bridge. Blackrock Hostel. Looks okay. There are others, e.g. Invershin which a pal rates. Can be shortened by 40m omitting Ness if weather unkind. Day 4 Wednesday: c175m Evanton round the coast anti-clockwise to Kyle of Tongue via John o' Groats (the UK's most northerly car park). Day 5 Thursday: c150-180m depending on location. e.g. Tongue, Durness, Lochinver loop, Ullapool, Gairloch, Kinlochewe. Day 6 Friday: c190m on to Tyndrum (Glen Coe). Missing out Skye. Day 7 Saturday: c150-180m depending on route, Tyndrum, to Drymen via Oban. edit: *Dunnottar (thanks Dougie)
On the Sunday from Bellingham if you turn off the M90 at Dunfermline and follow the signs to Crieff it will take you up past Knockhill and down through Glen Devon.once you get to Crieff take the "Sma Glen Road" (A822) to Dunkeld. On the Monday i woudn't join the A92 untill Montrose, (from Dunkeld take the A923 to Blairgowrie then onto Kirrimuir,Forfar then back road to Brechin (B9134) then on to Montrose) once you get to Dunnotter Castle (i take it thats what you are calling Stonehaven castle?) i would personally leave the coastal road and go up the "Slug Road" (A957) then take the A97 to Huntly then on to Porsoy, rather than doing the coast road which imho is not great, although once you got to fraserburgh you might enjoy the coast road to Portsoy
Dont listen to him Rich ...hes only saying take the A97 cos he knows I dont like it from Dinnet to Mosset. Thing is youll love it its like a switch back up and over rollercoaster.
The Slug road and the A97 all the way up to Huntly is a cracker,it's been years since i travelled north of Stonehaven up the coastal road on a bike but before and after Aberdeen is not good and all i remember after that is dual carriageways and rather boring straight roads, but i'm guessing the road from Fraserburgh to Portsoy would be more interesting..not been up that way in years, was going to do the East Coast 250 this year but never got round to it.
Aberdeen to Peterhead is straight and wide, there are other options. Fraserburgh to Portsoy is fast flowing, I like it alot , the coast road past Pennan is a real ride, only narrow, and gravel on the corners, I love it cos I know it.
I enjoyed the coast road just north of Aberdeen and then round to Portsoy. Maybe skirt Peterhead and Frazerboro'.
