Hi All, I have a 1992 1200 trophy,at the moment the bike is using oil. I have replaced the oil seals on the front sprocket, clutch shaft and gearchange shaft as they looked a little wet this has improved the problem a little bit , its not burning any oil either with the throttle open or when I shut off , I did an oil/filter change when I first bought it and used mobil 1 oil which was recommended in the haynes manual. the bike has done approx 48,000 miles. There doesnt appear to be anywhere else that oil is getting out. Any suggestions or help will be much appreciated
How much is it using do you think? I'm assuming it isn't "marking its territory" by leaving little drops on the floor. My Trident 900, with over 54,000 miles on the clock, uses very little. Don't think I've topped it up more than once over the last 1k miles (currently using Motul 5100 10w/40). When we toured on it, I would take a litre bottle with me and usually brought around half of it back - and that over 2/3,000 miles in a couple of weeks. I believe that if it uses less than half a litre in 1.000 miles then all is well - I'm sure I read that somewhere. Seems a bit high to me though! Maybe it was for summat else! Mine has never been that greedy!
Popey Check your filter and engine breather. Also check if your machine is running hot as that can lead to heated oil blowing out of the breather. Regards Joe
ok thanks, it doesnt appear to be running hot going by the gauge but will put a new thermostat in, also doesnt look like the fan is kicking in so will put a new switch on to solve that. when you say check the breather and filter what am i looking for ? Thanks again by the way
Popey Yes the air box will have tell tale signs dirty filter in there or bad oil residue in the bottom of the box. Don't forget they usually get a oil residue there anyway. The engine breather will come of the rear of the engine usually behind the cylinder head and barrels guessing as i don't know your model. It may go to the air filter box or will drop down around the centre stand fixing point. Regards Joe.
What is the std recommended oil? i would guess a 10w30 not sure why people insist on useing 10w40 or 10w 50 all this does is put more strain on the oil pump and make the pressure relief valve work harder most modern engines are designed with different materials and much closer tolerances than the older ones and really dont require heavy oils, the std recommended oil for my 1975 Trident is a 20w50 and i use a 20w60 simply to keep the oil pressure higher with the much lager tolerances used on these old engines.
