Hi to all I want to remove my lower fork legs on my 2009 America to spruce them up. Is this a fairly straight forward job and does anyone know of an online guide. Should i just buy a Haynes manual cheers Paul.T
Its a straightforward job , get the front wheel off the floor & take that out - I use a scissor lift which goes underneath the frame & lifts both wheels off the floor , their about £90 - but if you've got a centre stand fitted or something else then great. when wheel is out , make sure front brake caliper & speedo drive are nicely tucked up out the way & remove front mudguard - then unfasten the lower fork covers from underneath the lower fork brace & slide them down past the lower fork legs - then slacken off the lower fork brace lock bolts & the top yoke lock bolts . gently tug both forks down one at a time , don't pull on the lower fork leg to pull them out , grip onto the chrome upper fork part & gently twist & slide down . Before removal make a note of how far the fork sticks up through top yoke (usually 5-10 mm - or level if you like - the farther through they are the quicker your steering will be) . The upper cover will stay in place between the top yoke & the lower fork brace - they can stay in situ for when you shove the forks back up again later . When you replace the forks , you may need a bit of wd40 in both yokes to ease them back through . Torque the clamp bolts back up or if no torque wrench or settings - just nip them up but don't over tighten them . Same with wheel nut & caliper bolts . I would recommend a Haynes manual though for torque settings etc , I've got one though so can update you later when home from work lol
