So this Weekend with 100 or so miles on the clock, i decided to add some miles to push through tp the first service... Ended up in deepest Cornwall (450 mile round trip over 2 days), now really need that 1st service! How are people finding it on long trips? Some personal observations: stock seat OK, but after about 1h 30 definitely time for a leg stretch. Anyone got the comfort seat? Saw 185 miles on a tank (including several beyond zero miles!). Laying on tank offers some protection on M'Way behind clocks (getting cafe racer fairing fitted soon, will be an interesting comparison). Clip-on position fine for me up to about 1hr 30, kinda wished for cruise control on the dull stretches! Again, lower clip-ons with fairing will be an interesting comparison. Engine superb, especially once 4k limit was passed. Happy with 'non-R' bits and pieces thus far, my limits are far lower than even the standard setup probably warrants! Bike is a great talking point during stops - nothing but compliments. For those in the South West, the A39/A361 Atlantic Highway from Newquay to Taunton via Barnstaple and Tiverton is an epic ride (the sun was shining, hardly any traffic, on a Thruxton..) Any good tips for long distances on a Thruxton gratefully received - doing Gloucester to Dover next month..
Sounds as if you had a good run,i've never been down that part of the country before..maybe one day! as for the numb bum not a lot you can do about it if your on motorways, but once you get to the twisties and your moving about a bit it shoudn't be a problem, when i was looking for a speed triple i'd heard the standard seat was pretty hard, so i was thinking i might need the comfort seat, but the majority of my riding is off motorways and mainly twisties so i've not had a problem with it, someone suggested the padded cycling shorts, you do get padded motorbike shorts which might be a good idea too
I can vouch for the Aldi cycling shorts and the extra padding from my time on the stock Bonneville seat!
... more 'natural' padding I guess! Padded shorts a really good idea, and I always try to keep off the beaten track where possible. I lived in Cornwall for about 15 years prior to the Gloucs. move (inlaws live in Redruth) so know the A39 very well, just hadn't ever done the full distance on a great bike before!
Hey there! Sry, can't comment on the thruxton but notice your a local....virtually....i'm down in the forest of dean I'm just awaiting arrival on T120 Black edition having just sold my Street triple R this weekend...which was bad timing due to the immense sunshine. Did you get yours from performance triumph Cheltenham?
Yes I did, Both Jason and Steve very helpful. Just been in there this evening - it was Jason's recommendation to ride to Cornwall, so I had to bring my 1st service date left by about a month! I'm just down the road from the local TOMCC who meet at Gloucester airport, apparently - so just joined that as well
Ah yeah the whole dealership is really helpful tbh, fully recommend! funnily enough i was in there this afternoon as well speaking with Jason, sorting a few extras for the Bonny when it arrives Yeah cornwall's got some really great roads, as does alot of the south west, i fully plan to get out and rack up the miles once i get the bike! Does the owners club get out much for ride outs and such do you know?
Don't know yet, still waiting for the membership Don't know yet, still waiting for membership stuff to come through. A lot happens at The Aviator pub at the airport though, plus a fair few rideouts around our bit of the county
They usually do one official ride out a month and then members will sort other unofficial ones amongst themselves. I belong to the Surrey branch and we have one on the second thurs of month, there's been a day out to the iow, trip to Brussels and another one planned to Ireland! So there's usually plenty going on. Tis only £20 and you get a monthly mag too, good knowledge on bikes and some banter! Banters not quite up to this standard, but close!!
Did Gloucester to Swansea and back, 200 odd miles as I took the scenic route on Sunday on my 2014 900 and found it fine, but would be really interested to know how you get on with the fairing as it is painful on the M/Way
ah might have to have a look in to that then, would be nice to get out with a few others for a ride out! but i guess if theres a few of us that fancy a jolly we could always sort something eh
Not a Thruxton Rider, but regularly ride this road on my Speed Triple. I'm in Instow, so pretty much slap bang in the middle. A361 is my link to the outside world, and can be a nice ride on a good day, but if you divert at South Molton on to the B3227 and / or A396 it's a real classic bringing you out on the A361 roundabout at Tiverton or on to Taunton. The A39 from here down to Strong Adolfo's Cafe at Wadebridge is a favorite for an early morning ride / breakfast trip.
