Hi, I'm going to look at a '06 Speedmaster this afternoon with a view to buying, can anyone give me any advice about known issues/problems I should be keeping my eyes open for please?

    Thanks

    Hi and welcome.
I have an 07 reg carbs model which I got 12 months back with 14.5K on the clock. Once I got used to the riding position no hang ups at all until the ECU failed around Christmas last year.
After a long period of head scratching, poking about with a multi meter to check all of the inputs to the damned thing and, some valuable input from an electronics techy neighbour, I found that the fail was down to a crack on the back of the module and some corrosion and burn marks near one of the pins. Not a cheap fix but got a new one, plugged it in, pressed the button and brum brum.
Had it serviced and it only needed new back brake pads (I never the back brakes anyway), MOT passed and away we went, well until the blood weather went bum upwards.
Apart from the ECU snag, no other problems apart from the weather stopping my fun. Just keep it clean and shinny and you shouldn't have a problem, plus there's plenty of folk on here who can give advice etc. Enjoy when / if you get it.:D

Hi Sceptic, just for your general info carb'd bikes don't have ECU's - they have something called an igniter which provides the spark at the right time.

    Did it look like this:

I have a '05 Speedmaster, I've had it a year and have not had any problems at all. The only 'issue' I've had is having a BIG grin on my face every time I ride it!!

I've not read of any major issues these bikes have.

OUCH, you slapped my bad wrist.:(
Yup, bang on. OK my bad.
So I called it by the wrong name ignitor / ecu, but it does do pretty much the same thing without all that bollocks with Lambda sensors etc, and, when ferked up it stops that big black engine thingy from working. :pIt's all just way over-priced electronic crap anyway.:D

    Hi Peter
Hi Pete, I heard something similar. That plus possible moisture getting through the crack could be the root cause of mine failing.

I'm OK mate, I've signed for the new house today so we now have the keys and work can commence. Re the over-tightening question, I've not come across that.
