Hot Battery

    I got home after my 1 hour commute and took out the tool bag from under the seat so I can adjust the chain tension
    I notice the tool set was rather warm and it sits quite close to the battery

    When I felt the battery it was very warm, in fact quite hot

    I don't recall my battery being so warm before so wondering if this is normal.
    I recently replaced the stator and rectifier which solved a charging issue I had.

    I have a Motobat installed, the model is correct as per the Motobat website.

    The bike is running fine, no issues.

    I will check things over with a Multimeter in the morning, but wondering if anyone else has noticed if their battery is warm/hot after a run?

    Motobatts have been known to explode.

    I checked with the multimeter this morning, and it sat at 12.6v
    Turnedthe ignition on and started her up and there was 19v going through the battery at tickover!
    I thought the voltage should be 14/15volt max when the enging is turning over

    To me I would guess the rectifier isn't doing it's job, or the stator is chucking out to much.

    Ouch!! Reg/rec must be bolloxed.:( 12.6v is spot on for a battery 'at rest'.:) Circa 14v when engine is running is about right, depending on revs.:cool: 19v is fecking scary!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

    It is a new rectifier, about three months since installed, purchased from Square Deals.
    I will test the connections tonight and let Squaredeals know to expect a replacement

    Damn.

    ouch battery is being cooked, no wonder its hot !!
    By chance did you check it when it was first fitted ?

    Yep, when I installed the new stator and rectifier, the current was around the 14V mark

    I have to keep usign the bike for my commute each day, new rectifier ordered after a tel call to Squaredeals. They said they would send the old rectifier to the manufacturer for a refund but there is no warrranty as they usually get broken due to 'outside infuences' when fitting.
    As I got the battery and stator from them (and indeed pretty all of my bike stuff) I hope they dont try avoiding fault....

    I can ill afford to by a rectifier at £110 + £5 delivery every few months!

    Okay, I checked the battery again when I got home and it was warm/hot again.
    With the engine running it was sat at 13.8v / 14.0v
    I turn the ignition off (key out) and the battery was at 13.0v

    This behavior I would expect from a normal battery/charging system. Except for the heat

    I will take a closer look in the morning
    - Key off
    - Key in with lights on
    - Engine turning over
    - and then every 30 secs for a few minutes

    See what the readings are then

    Square deals have a new rectifier in the post to me.

    I have a spare battery I can test it against to see if it is the battery or charging system over the weekend

    So the resultsof my Multimeter test first thing in the morning are:

    Key out - 12.98v
    key in/lights on - 12.09v
    Engine running - 18v + climbing
    after 30s - 18.2v
    after 60s - 18.1
    After 90s - 18.1

    After my 1h commute - 14.0v

    I now have my replacement rectifier (delivered next day by Squaredeals), but I will first try a second battery to eliminate the battery being at fault.
    Then switch over the rectifier (the current/old one was installed in July)

    I will also be ordering a voltmeter so I can observe what is going through the battery all the time, there is a nice one by Squaredeals by KOSO for £24.99 (plus delivery (~£5)

    Fixed up an old but working battery, same results as before.
    I remembered I still had my old rectifier so connected that up and the charge was a steady 13.9v
    So took out the broken one and replaced my old one properly

    Both the broken and the brand new rectifier I received the other day will go back.

    Will let you guys know.

    I have just had confirmation from Frank at Squaredeals-ltd.co.uk that he has received the returned rectifiers yesterday and has processed a full refund today.

    So very happy and got fantastic customer service as always

    Battery is running and charging fine now, however, with the cold weather it would have been nice sitting on a heated seat, even if it was due to a cooking battery:eek::D

    Not had any recent dealings with Squaredeals but both the goods and service I received from them in the past were excellent.:cool: Long may that continue!:)

    I try and buy most of my stuff through squaredeals, frank has offered great service and if there are any slight problems with the product he will rectify it quickly

    Hi RT, lucky you noticed that warm tool kit leading you to find overcharging fault, the lights must of been well bright, SD came up trumps with a refund for the faulty rectifier hope battery has not been damaged in anyway, is this a sealed battery as electrolyte may have been boiled off, the voltmeter is a good addition, bikes and cars lack important things like this these days.

    As it happens, I used part of the refund to buy more stuff from SD. I received a voltmeter today that is perfect size to sit in the cowling just above the clocks.
    Bike has been starting fine, with only the slightest of a stutter when it was a rather frosty morning recently.
    It is a Motobatt brand that is Glass gel filled or similar.

    Hi RT, Glad you have your bike sorted now but its a bit of a worry when a 12/14.5 volt system has had 19volt + going through it.

    Bikes are a bit like a slot machines we keep putting money into them but we do get a lot of pleasure from them when they are running correctly, nothing worse than doing the same job twice lets hope your charging circuit remains working as it should.
