hi folks , currently looking at acquiring a trophy probably a 98-2003 model as my first entry in the triumph world, looking at what’s available either the 900 or 1200, is there much differences between the 2 apart from the power difference, I think I’m right in thinking the 900 is a triple and the 1200 a four I will be using the bike for weather dependent ride outs and also for taking the wee wifey out so roughly 50/50 solo/pillion, speed is no consent as I would class myself as a doddler so knee down action doesn’t interest me,over 50 now so enjoy a relaxed pace, we will be planning some long distance 2up tours in the future so any advice would be welcomed and appreciated
Welcome Tom, as DD says they’re a bit big and heavy but once on the move they’re fast, smooth and comfy, especially the 1200. He’s also very right about the battery, a common trait with most Triumphs, they really are sensitive to a poor battery. It’s worth trying to fit in a larger capacity battery if you can. For example, the standard battery for my Daytona is a 12Ah but I’ve fitted a 16.5Ah which has better starting capacity and as such now turns over much better.
thanks for the welcome went to see a 2002 1200 this evening and a very nice machine it is 34k intensive service history and in beautiful condition , owned by a triumph enthusiast he has another 2 or 3 triumphs. was expecting it to feel heavier but didn’t feel much difference in weight with my 650 v strom but I am 6 foot 17 stone and properly flat footed on it , and more importantly the wee wifey likes it so deal done my first triumph

Welcome in. Nice bike, should suit you well. My Trident 900 has taken me and SWMBO on many holidays to Scotland, Wales and France with three fully loaded 36ltr Givi cases and a loaded tank bag full of enough stuff for up to 2 weeks galavanting around. It coped beautifully, as indeed did we. So a 1200 Trophy will be perfectly adequate for your needs, I would guess. I too am around the six foot and 17st mark. SWMBO isn't! Apparently good things come in small packages - she says!! Anyway, enjoy your new bike.
the only thing I’m on the lookout now for is a top box and fitting plate., think finding a colour coded matching one will be difficult so may have to go universal
Plenty of boxes available from around £30 upwards on fleebay. Givi and Kappa use the same base plate - or they did! If you opt for a large box, e.g. 52ltr, don't be tempted to put too much weight in it as this could make the steering on the bike very (dangerously) light. Don't ask me how I know - it was a very long time ago and I was much younger, m'lud! Keep the heavy stuff low down in the panniers and preferably similar weights each side. Balance rear end weight with a magnetic tank bag if you need more room, but make sure the base of the bag is grit free and also the top of tank. I use black rubber webbing under mine to alleviate that problem and the magnets are still powerful enough to hold the bag (probably the best £30 I ever spent - a Hein Gericke jobby from years ago) in place. Just be aware that Trophys are a bit top heavy anyway, as are Tridents, so pack your luggage thoughtfully. It was never a problem for us though, 'coz I is big and strong and tough don'tcha know! It will all become second nature anyway so don't worry. Enjoy!
I did just buy an eBay 52ltr one not so much to carry weight but more for sticking 2 helmets in when leaving the panniers at home, I have an almost brand new 2 month old givi tank lock bag which I have discovered annoyingly you can't get a flange for the trophy and can't seem to find any reference if any of the flanges have fitted through other owners trial and error, only other thing im trying to work out is a ram mount option and wether it can be fitted into a handlebar camp bolt
