    Hi all!

recently bought a 2004 bonneville and having failed to find the cause of the poor starting I thought I’d stop by here, say hi and see if anyone has a similar experience.....

so far I’m down to suspecting the cdi and/or pickup coil and possibly something causing a voltage drop in turn causing a crap spark

    Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum
What condition is the battery in?
    I would start with that.

    Welcome.
My wrenching skills are just developed to the point of making me dangerous, but I'd start with the usual suspects: plugs, fuel filter, throttle bodies or injectors (is the '04 fuel injected?), Anyway, good luck sorting it out.

Thanks. So far, new battery, oil, plugs and leads, full service (new filters, oil, check valve caps and compression) clean carbs, replace jets, check carb balance. I’ve just checked the pick up coil function and it looks okish on the oscilloscope. There’s still something causing quite a current drain on the battery under starting and I’m starting to suspect the cdi and the pickup and possibly the starter colenoid

Hi all, reporting back with an update....

so for those interested in such things..... I’ve finally got to the bottom of my bonnevilles crap cold starting..... after a day in the ultrasonic tank I just reassembled the (immaculately) clean carbs and put them back on the bike. 1/2 choke and it fired up on the button!! More tweaking tomorrow (mixture and main jet need setting to suit new exhaust) when I’m not going to wake half the street but I’m well chuffed :)

Welcome to the forum and glad to hear you're on the right path with your Bonnie. From other discussion I've read on the forum the ultrasonic treatment seems to be golden; thanks for letting us know the latest progress. Spent a little time in Germany; lived in Schwedelbach and Herschberg and had our third baby there. Hope you enjoy the forum. Ride safe.
