Strasbourg yesterday - getting closer to the border! There was a mass evacuation of Strasbourg in 1940 but the majority chose to return after a few months. They found building and street names changed back to German and swastikas everywhere. It was forbidden to speak French, wear a beret or whistle "La Marseilles" - a personal tour of the nearest concentration camp was your reward. Most young men were conscripted into the German army to fight on the Russian front. Much harder to live here than in other parts of France.
Yes the Tanners Quarter - just like Colmar, which is really a small version of Strasbourg. Cathedral is amazing - after the Revolution, it was decided to demolish the top of the spire (some nonsense about equality) a locksmith suggested that it would serve the cause of the Revolution better if it were to wear the red bonnet or Liberty Cap. So it did and the spire survived!

Oh and one more thing: Seems like most of the Strongholds and Castles are only accessible by guided tours. (The stronghold in Monschau is a youth-hostel) You unfortunately can not just walk through as in a museum. We have to see how this works out timing-wise and if we want to commit. Prices above. How much does the tours cost mister? Can I bring my mum with me and her mum? Is there a commode for them to use and can they have a window seat, they don’t smell?!
