i have a 2012 Thruxton ... There is slight corrosion/pitting on the aluminium engine side cover and on the top of the fake carbs Are these covers lacquered? Or plain metal ... Can I hit them with some autosol or do I need to live with it or strip and polish ?

Do it now, then all will be good for spring. Check your front spokes for rust,it's a known issue around the nipples, more time with solvol!! Afterwards give them a good covering of acf50 to protect over the winter.
Perhaps it's an initial hassle, but in the long run, a far nicer and easier solution. I had valve covers powder coated silver, then clear. They look (and stay looking) highly polished!
Mmm not good mines been bubbling for about two years thought I would just wire wool it nope,wire brush about 1hour later some of it came off. More thought mmm polish it up maybe nope small blade screwdriver and broke hacksaw blade all bubbling gone,now what there in the cupboard could be the answer silver hammer Finnish hamerite job done first ride out a little hot paint smell will keep eye on it. This on a 20004 bonnie.
