Hi Guys, I’m new to Bonneville ownership having just purchased a 2001 T100 which had been sitting untouched for about 4 or 5 years. On the day of collection it ran as sweet as a nut, the carbs had been stripped, cleaned and balanced. It’s been sat since collection ( only a couple of weeks) it started occasionally. It won’t tick over and when I took it for a run today it was as lumpy as anything with black sooty emissions..Am I looking at likely blocked jets / stuck floats. Both silencers get rather hot too.. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Neil
It sounds as though the tank was not flushed and fresh debris/rust has washed through. Silencers do get hot.... How much of a mechanic are you?
.......you need to strip and clean the carbs and rinse the tank and fuel lines. A carb cleaner aerosol and a few tools, fresh fuel should suffice.
Neil1970 Time to get those carbs of again. This time get them sonically cleaned flush the tank and fit an inline filter for a few miles. Regards & Happy Christmas. Joe.
Hi Callumity, Thanks for the reply. My suspicions are correct then? I’m a confident enough home mechanic to whip off the carbs and give them a clean. Do you reckon whilst I’m doing that to fit larger jets?

Neil1970 No I would clean the existing jets. Get the bike running at it's best then decide where to go from there. Regards & Happy Christmas. Joe.
Don’t fiddle with jets unless you’re opening up the airbox and fitting free flowing exhausts. You will achieve nothing and create a permanent rich condition. Not good! If you are feeling flush (£5!) I suggest you fit these https://www.squaredeals-ltd.co.uk/b...burettor-stainless-steel-screw-kit-3973-p.asp because if you need to go back in again you can drop float bowls without disassembling much else.

Afterthought......you have adjusted the tickover speed via knurled knob rear of LH carb? 1050-1100 rpm.

I bought my 07 carbed 865 a couple of months back, it has had problems with the carbs, the dealer has replaced all the parts possible to replace, but now it seems to have an electrical problem as well...it had been stood unused for 3-4 years, waiting to hear today if they have finally sorted it
What symptoms were you experiencing? Most ignition problems are down to the coil or igniter and easily fixed although the intermittence before they finally die can fox people.
at first, it leaked petrol over the floor, float sticking, they fixed that, then it conked out, the replaced the jets, float valves, cleaned out bits of rubber from the carbs, then reflushed the tank, replaced the fuel pipe etc it ran for about 120 miles then conked out again. they replaced the crank position sensor, it conked out again, then they looked at a potential problem with the neutral causing it to conk out, but that did not resolve it. I read a report that said this model has problems with the ignition coil, pick up coil and the igniter unit. I am phoning them shortly so will list these as things to look at.
Excuse my scepticism but while rubber bits might perish the jets and floats do not. It would take some mileage to wear them out. I would be for servicing the sidestand switch and replacing the ignition coil with a PVL unit before switching out the igniter. Wait and see what the dealer says......
