A bacon lettuce & tomato sandwich (BLT) is popular in this USA. Especially with home grown tomatoes. Yum. Have never tried it but maybe an avacado slice also vs mayonnaise. Is BLT popular in the UK?

Hi ODA. BLT is OK here but think the 'Full English' is more popular here (you can google that if you want) - others will be along to confirm/deny, maybe.

Just bought some bacon today for that very purpose! BLT's are such a summertime sandwich, ODA. :):sun: I have had BLT's with avocado and like that addition a lot. Unfortunately we don't have any homegrown tomatoes in the house but there's a great farmer's market a two minute walk from our house each Sunday morning. We may have to mosey over there expressly for tomatoes for BLT's!

BLTs very popular in NZ. :cool:Younger crowd have Avocado as an extra, while I love thickly sliced beetroot and some smoked cheddar

Interesting additions! I've never tried a BLT with cheese of any sort but love smoked cheddar. And I'm not quite sure what beetroot is. Well, I'm assuming it's the root of a beet but that doesn't really help.

I think this is the same...we just call it pickled beets rather than beetroot. Ill give the cheeses and beet(root) sandwich a try! It sounds rather good. :yum

Curing your own bacon is the thing to do - especially over here - you choose your spices - rub and turn for five days and voila - water free bacon without the nitrites (can be carcinogenic) and tastes - delicious. Just get yourself some belly pork from a source of known quality - preferably Gloucestershire Old Spot (you are unlikely to have that breed over there ODA & Sandi - you've probably got something like Young Florida Fudge Smudgers or summit)

We could substitute spinach leaves or better yet parsley for lettuce. Will have to try the beet and cheese.

Don’t forget we mean subtly different things by ‘bacon’. US bacon generally is cured belly pork - what the UK calls ‘Streaky’. British bacon can be ‘back’ (the lean tenderloin portion), streaky (fatty as above) or ‘middle’ bacon which is loin & belly in one piece. The list of cures both sides of the Pond is endless.

I grow my own beetroot, lettuce and tomatoes. Have yet to see a packet of bacon seeds in the garden centre though so I'll have to keep going to the butcher or supermarket for that piece of the sandwich...

I don't think that a sandwich to better a bacon and egg butty has, or will, ever be invented.:yum:yum:yum
However, a sausage and egg sandwich does run it close!:yum:yum
Just be careful with the egg yolk or you may end up wearing it:eek:! I'm a retired truck driver, I know about these things!!
