1992 Trophy 1200

    Hi all,
    Great to find this group!
    I am considering buying a 1992 Trophy 1200 as a donor bike for a cafe racer project. Research leads me to believe the standard bhp is 108 which is less than I would like. Does anyone have any suggestions for tuning the engine in order to get some good gains, ideally wanting to end up with 130ish.

    The 1992 Trophy your'e looking at actually had the higher power output engine, around 135 I believe, and there is a difference in ignitors ( high power & high torque ) too over the models.
    As far as I understand it the Daytona has different cams and a high output ignitor making most of its power at the top of the rev range, whereas the Trophy's generally produce more low down torque and are said to be easier to ride around town. Whilst The 1200 Trophy is no sports bike I think you will be surprised by the power delivery and handling especially if you're removing the fairings at the front end.
    Ride the Trophy and decide from there what you want to do, there is also a "T300" group on Facebook that you might find of interest, or the " modified T300 " group.

    Thanks for the info. I have been after a Daytona for a while but to no avail so am thinking of settling for a cheaper option of the trophy. Just not 100% sure about it

    The earlier 1200 trophy's made the most power after about 96" the power dropped, camsc were changed !

    1991 and 92 Trophy 1200s had 125bhp. That dropped a bit on the Trophy4 model from late 92 onwards then down to 108 with increased torque from 96 onwards.
    1200 Daytona allegedly had 147bhp using the high compression pistons from the 750/1000cc models and a different cam profile.

    I'm told the cam from the Daytona into the Trophy gives a modest increase without losing too much torque lower down the rev range.
    Having ridden both, the Trophy has better manners at normal (ahem officer) road speeds and the Daytona is better if you constantly use the upper half of the rev range.
    An early Trophy will run mid elevens over the quarter and the Daytona a couple of tenths quicker.

    The best way to get them quicker is to lose some fecking weight! Not easy when the engine alone is well over 80kg!!! Cafe racer mods can lose loads and you will need to fit later model Trophy or Daytona calipers and floating discs to the front as the standard Trophy brakes are fashioned from the finest plywood and are complete shite. Later rear wheel is 17" rather than 18" too and a straight swap.

    Clive Wood in Boston(ish) runs a T300 course every year which is well worth the £80. He's a racer and ex-triumph tech who developed the early Speed Triples for racing in the 90's.

    Modular design - even the 5 speed from the Legend and Adventure were interchangable.
    Gearbox ratios may be different, but they atre interchangable.

    The early T300's responded well to exhaust and intake modification. My Trident 885 (900) had gutted out airbox and K&N air filter, modified the carburettors by drilling out the vacuum bypass portsand lifting the needles. Put a 3 into 1 exhaust on it. This increased/improved throttle response and HP.
