hi all seem to have an oil leak at the base of the push rod tube the one on the back any thoughts would be greatly received thank you neil briscoe
I'm sorry Neil that I can't help you with your question but I couldn't not comment on your bike - she's a beauty !!!!
A leak from the pushrod tube you say? They all do that, Sir. No, seriously, they all do that!! The steel tube expands at a different (faster?) rate than the alloy housing, and the seal cannot cope (a walrus would be a better option but you try finding one to fit. Oh damn those feckin' voices in my head .... again!!). Best advice is ... head off (not yours, that would be silly!), fit new seals and smother them lovingly with a suitable silicon sealant before re-assembly. Then pray to your favourite god for a good outcome. I do believe that the new seals available these days are better at sealing than the originals. If you feel you need to go down that route then ask the supplier for advice. There are plenty of specialist suppliers who would be happy to help with relevant info. You will, of course, need a new cylinder head gasket as well.
Yep, Goolie is correct, they all do it eventually. I'm working on my 1975 Bonnie and really working on those push rod tube seals. I've gone down the later design push rod tubes, later tappet blocks and O ring seals. These rely on what are called wedding bands (they look like wedding rings) the O ring sits in so does the tube the band stops O ring squeezing out sideways. Head off new (good quality) head gasket set and pushrod seals. Have a chat with a triumph parts man, I used TMS this time but find all of them helpful. Not what yer wanted to hear but those tube seals are a common problem. Even then I'm not sure I'll stop it leaking but I'm hopeful. That's one lovely bike you have Neil.
Thanks all doesn't sound as it might cause perminant damage so I'll live with it for a while maybe have a look in the winter Cheers
