My younger brothers did an experiment similar to this, they mixed different grades/types of gunpowder. They put black powder (slow burning) on top of grey (fast burn) and lit it ! The result was no eyebrows and peppered burns over their faces ! The how... The fast burn threw up the black powder which ignited on the way up into their faces. Only thing they didn't do. Was film it !!!! Cheers capt.
