I've seen some fantastic graffiti on my travels. I always photograph the best ones and I actually have a graffiti file on my laptop. Here are a couple of good ones.. That was in Split (Croatia). And yes, you guessed it, Cuba.
Patience is a virtue...... @Martine Drum roll ....... in my 2nd place is this one..... dah da! Now I've no real idea what this is about although I do have a few thoughts, if anyone can shed any light on it's meaning then please do so? Bear in mind the size of this, the building is four storeys high and the clarity is superb. The time and effort put in here must have been quite substantial.
And my number one is....... Again this is four storeys tall and if anyone can shed any light on its real meaning, please fire away? I was thinking biblical. Is it relating to Eve, as in Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit?
Anyone here old enough to remember Roobarb from 1974 (as if I need to ask)? This is painted with permission on some shuttered shops in the Frogmore area of High Wycombe. The square (more of a triangle really) is going to be "gentrified" soon and the local council has got some of the local art college students to keep it from looking too derelict... There is a Custard to go with Roobarb on another shop front but he seemed to be smoking an odd-shaped cigarette for some reason! But he is right beside half of Daft Punk just to mix it up.
I've got to respond to this one. Little idea as to what the artist is trying to say, although the biblical reference is obviously there; Eve eating the forbidden fruit which gives the knowledge of Good and Evil. The things that strike me are:- The woman is represented in shades of grey, where the "fruit" is in colour. The fruit is the Earth and were it not for her fingers, we would be viewing the world with Africa front and centre. Ironically, especially with what's happening in the Middle East at present, the parts of the world that we can see are the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal, their surrounding nations and the nations of the Eastern Mediterranean. The woman looks to me to be North African in face shape and head dress. Is she challenging the viewer by looking directly at them? Is she eating or kissing the Earth? SO many questions, it certainly makes you think: Which is probably beyond the mental capacity of those who added the rather crude and colourful tags to the bottom of the street art. Thanks for sharing it @Eldon
Graffiti, “drawings or paintings on/in a public place done without permission”, so in that respect, most will be “graffiti” although, IMO the quality of the artwork is waaayyyy better than some of the abstract shite hung in galleries and supposedly worth with £££££££!
Wow, such a comprehensive insight @RevPaul that like you say, actually adds more questions than answers. Thank you for your thoughts
Look at this "abstract shite" then @Pegscraper .... Apparently they took over a year each to do and are best described as huge. This is in Poland, Krakow. I spoke to a polish friend and he fully explained all the scene, characters etc.
Now that is proper art. I could stand and look at that for ages. I was thinking more along the lines of something like this..... http://www.nationalgalleries.org/artandartists/artistspablopicasso I could stare at that for the rest of my life and still not have a clue what the feck is going on!
