Hello all, DanF here. I had some sort of catastrophic failure in the engine my Thunderbird 1700. Im investigating the problem. The local dealer wanted a grand just to open the cases. Im trying to do it myself. Ive got the engine out of the bike and will try and tear it down next week. Im not used to parallel twins and this engine is way more sophisticated than the V twin I have experience of ( Sportster ). Ive got the manual but it's pretty sparse, any advice, tips and experience of tearing down a Thunderbird 1700 would be hugely appreciated. Cheers, Dan F
Get a factory service manual, not the owner's manual. You'll need special tools for the crank and camshafts. Take tons of photos and label every bolt and wire. It's a complex engine, so go slow.
Thanks Robbi, good advice. Ive been doing that as I go and I have the Factory service manual. Going slow, taking pictures and learning on the job. Got the engine out, splitting the cases tomorrow. Cheers.
@DanF Welcome to the family. Do your build in the rebuild section with pictures and peep can see and help.
